MB spec T3 on aaz - anyone give me some reviews?
« on: June 03, 2009, 05:32:54 am »
well i've outgrown my long suffering k14 and i really want to go up to the MB-spec T3 on my AAZ.

i'm planning to run it at about 20-25psi (my daily, does between 700-1000km/week).

just wanting to hear from anyone who has the aaz-t3 combo and the kind of difference it has made. my main thing is i want to allow for some extra exhaust flow in the thing, because when i tow a decent sized trailer, the k14 makes too much boost ;-)

I have a modified AAZ/T3 in a Mk 1 Caddy. I have ARP studs throughout (a necessity), balanced, ported head, Giles pump (also a necessity), PP 2.5" downpipe and a 2.25" Magnaflow exhaust. I couldn't be happier, though I've yet to turn it over 10psi. It pulls so strong it surprises a lot of Honda owners. I am installing a 2-stage boost controller tomorrow, so the fun starts then. I plan on 10-12 psi daily and 20-25 psi at the flip of a switch.

Sounds like a neat idea, let us know how it all works out

ok - but please, what T3 do you have? i'm specifically asking about the 300D spec one.

also, on your boost controller idea - i'm curious about why you want to have it set up so - you will be relying heavily on the LDA to richen the mix if you tune your pump for not too much smoke at 12psi - conversely, if the pump is tuned so, you may not even be able to make as much boost as you wish to "at the flip of a switch". what pin are/will you be using?

You obviously have no idea how a Giles pump works. It is absolutely fantastic. The job of the LDA is to change fueling when boost increases and Giles is a master at perfectring that process. His LDA pin is a custom unit unlike anything I've ever seen.
My T3 is from a 1.6 TD Jetta. The Merc T3 is a bit open on the exhaust side and they take forever to spool up.

i beg your pardon, but you sound very rude with your comment there.

if YOU had an idea how a Giles pump worked, then wouldnt YOU be the one selling htem to people as well?

you didnt even answer my question about your turbocharger.

if you want to use an attitude, go over to vortex - you'll be more than welcome there.

I believe I said it was a T3 from a 1.6TD. Was there another question about the turbo???

I have converted a number of people to the religion of Giles. I can't sell them....only Giles can do that, obviously.

This statement is an indicator, to me, that you've never driven a Giles-injected car/truck. The "job" of the LDA is to accept pressure readings from the turbo and adjust the fuelling as required. That's what the LDA on a mechanical pump does. It's just that a Giles pump does it soooooo much better.

I was not trying to be offensive/rude in any way, I was just stating the obvious.

Sorry if I offended you in any way. It was not my intention.

apology accepted.

No, i havent ever driven a Giles pump equipped car or truck - I'm in Australia! its a long way, and a bad exchange rate. i'd bet theres not a single vehicle in the country with one.

I think my statement holds true for a standard pump.

anyhoo - turbocharger? what spec T3 are you using? - thankyou.

Wow, you know I really never thought about looking up the specs. It's the standard turbo on a late 80s-early 90s VW Jetta or Golf. They come on the 1.6 turbodiesel engine and it's head-and-shoulders above the stock 1.9 turbo.

ok - so the standard 1.6 T3.

i have taken it apart and measured it before -

The compressor side works out at 36 Trim, and the exhaust at 68 trim. the exhaust A/R is .36 . by rough calc, the compressor A/R is about 1.00

anyone correct me if i'm totally wrong... but thats what i calced based on measuring up the various turbo parts with my verniers.
