buildup 1.6l TD?
« on: September 06, 2005, 06:46:39 pm »
might be selling my Turbo gas car, so the question is how much would it cost to tear down and rebuild/upgrade my 1.6l TD motor?
It would need to be bored 285k on original rings, I would want to upgrade the turbo, IP, Injectors... is it worth porting intake/exhaust manifold or even the head?

how much hp and TQ could I possibly get and for how much $$$

Yep, that's what it was for my basic rebuild several years ago.  I didn't touch the turbo except I got a bad deal on pistons instead.  $125 each.  Ouch!

injector rebuild info can be found here on this forum. $125cdn or thereabouts for rebuilt 1.6TD injectors. a fully overhauled and worked IP from giles at superior is $900cdn if i'm not mistaken. i'd get a big downpipe and very free exhaust before i worried about porting.

you'll get far far more bang for the buck from an 8v gas junkyard turbo project, but you didn't hear it from me. if you're going for all-out speed and acceleration, i'm afraid you'll be disappointed after going through all the work on a 1.6TD and comparing it back to back with your gas turbo setup. diesel does have other advantages though.

his contact info has to be in the forum somewhere. run a search on his name or 'superior' and it should come up. he is also a member of this forum...

BTW, if I do go 1.6TD :

1/  Think I have read here that the 1.9 head bolts up? This would provide bigger valves as well as better tuning potential?
2/  Can the 1.6 be oversized at all for some more displacement? ( Will be reboring anyways )
3/ Will my 1.6D N/A tranny work with the 1.6TD?

I will be taking my time and want to do it right the first time, my 1.6D still running perfectly at 450,000 km's.
As well a slow buildup will be affordable and will give me time to take care of some bodywork / suspension issues.

Thanks for you patience with a newbie like me! ( have been driving diesel VW since 1981, but no tuning experience )

Thanks again

Hugh

1) as far as i know the 1.9L head will bolt up with some work but i'll let someone else elaborate on that.

2) you can overbore max .060 over. mine is at .040 right now. .020 is the first overbore size.

3) yes, almost any 02O transmission will fit up. certainly anything from a 4-cyl, pre-92 (non 02A) and some after '92. your NA box will fit fine.

Yeah, was red with beige vinyl seats, basic 'C' model.
Nice little car, but lots of electrical problems from water leaking onto fuse box. Back then it was hard to find knowlegable people to service the engine.
I had the head replaced but never ran well after that.
Paint faded badly.
Yes it had small tail-lights / round headlight. It was real 'cute' when I had winter Vredisteins on it ( baby monster )
Bought it 3200, sold it 2500 3 years later. Must have put at least 2000 into it over that time. Didn't have time nor experience to work on it myself back then.

sounds like a good little car... i like that colour combo. it must have been made in the first half of 1979 ...one of the last german rabbits to ship to north america (except some 79/80 german GTIs for canada).

if it makes you feel any better, my uncle owned a 1975 in chrome yellow i think was the name of the colour... and my DAD borrowed it, overheated the motor, and left it for dead at the side of the road back in the 80s!   (yes, it was a swallowtail...)

I believe 1mm (.040") is the 3rd and largest overbore size, (with .5mm (.020") being the 2nd, and .25mm (.010") being the 1st.)

when I did my rebuild they said that .040" was the 3rd and the largest oversize.
