If I wanted to how would I?
« on: May 29, 2009, 10:16:09 am »
I am thinking of taking the bumper off of the front of the Jetta. It is the one in my build thread. I am thinking it might be easier to take the engine out of the front and I want to see about what is needed besides the battery box to be welded up there. I want to get on it when I get home tonight, so please let me know. I am assuming that there are some bolts, but I am wanting to know locations of the bolts and how many etc, so I can get it off there real quick. Not much time left to go.

its only marginally easier.  i've done it on a mk2, and one of the front subframe bolts broke (very rusty).  IIRC there are just two bolts one on each end that need to be removed once all of the other stuff is out.  i would only recommend doing it if you were wanting to get rid of a/c, maybe flush out the rad, and clean up whatever up front (not a bad idea).  there's a lot of extra work going this route.  best way is to remove it from underneath onto something with wheels (tranny too makes it a lot easier) and then jack the car up high and slide the whole assembly out.  i've also removed one from up top, and its a bit of a pain.  the hood has to be removed, and the engine has to be tilted quite a bit to clear everything.  i found that there were quite a few snags going this route, and if you try to keep the a/c system closed, its much harder...

Taking the bumpers and front mount off is a risky gamble. I'm pretty sure there are 6 bolts, but you may only need to remove 4 of them. At least 1 will snap off, that's pretty much a gaurantee. You'll need to support the motor because you'll be removing the front motor mount at the same time.

I usually just remove the rad support and come out the top.

I just took my front end off yesterday to remove my A/C radiator. :P

Tyler is right, 3 bolts on both side of the bumper. But they will only snap off if you live in a salty place like Ontario! ;)

Then there is the rad support which has 2 bolts under each headlight and one on the bottom.

Then there is the lower part attached to the frame and that has a few as well. Can't remember how many though.

Oh, and the upper piece. The ledge that the hood rests on. That has 2 on each far side.

If I were to take an engine out of a car I would probably do this. It doesn't take too long but it really does leave you tons of room to work with. I would do it again!

Pic from yesterday hope it helps:
