Clutch release "bearing"

Hi all,
my clutch is making a weird noise, like the release bearing is packing up, except there isnt a release bearing is there?
is it possible to remove the central release rod from the gearbox without removing the gearbox?
is it possible im looking at the wrong thing?

There is a release bearing, it's just at the other end of the tranny.

He's right. there's a release bearing at the end of the tranny where the pedal pushes the rod. Two ways in.
1) pull the big ugly frost cap. to be avoided because you'll need a new cap when you put it back together.
2) Unbolt the whole end off the trans, you can put that back together with a little silicone after you change the bearing.

that bearing usually doesn't go bad, what is the car doing? could be the thrust plate, they like to *** out

I found the release bearing job to be awesomely simple, myself
It made me wish that part needed more regular service since I could do it so easily.
Sure, you gotta buy the green cap (I think I pay $5-7)
but it is really a half hour job that does not require a lift.
My kinda fixin!

but it is really a half hour job that does not require a lift.

I've re-used those green covers a couple times. If it fits snug then just put some some RTV or some form of sealer on with it. If it fits kind of loose just peen it a little to give a little snugger fit and use the sealant also. Of course if you can get one localy and that cheap a nice new green one is good

now i know where the noisy bearing is

but ive been warned that its not worth repairing my gearbox because im only going to chew it up internaly with my driving style

If you drop the clutch like a hot potato at every stoplight, sure....
but you can certainly drive very fast without being hard on the box at all.

i do a lot of 1/4 mile racing and a few track days, this is already my third gearbox in 18 months, 2 diffs dead and now the rumbly bearing. Cant see it lasting too much longer
