smoke......lots and lots of smoke
« on: September 05, 2005, 08:22:22 am »
What it is.............
10,000 mile rebuilt 1.6, new head, new Bosch injectors, 140k on injection pump(no leaks), no coolant in oil, no oil in coolant, injection timing and timing are dead nuts, new bosch quick plugs.
What it does.........
When my 81 rabbit cold starts it runs very rough. Sounds like only 3 of four cylinders are fireing. At the same time I'm getting alot of white smoke smelling very, very rich. When it warms up it smoothes out but only when the cold start is pulled. Without it, it misses bad. Ecomony is pour. .......
Any ideas?????????
Maybe I have a inaccurate dial indicator and injection timing is the prob??? I'm stumped.

Hmmmm.  My truck does the same dissapearing truck act in the white cloud when I start it.  Big cloud of white smoke that smells like diesel. Only seems to happen at colder temps (less than 45 or 50), and is worse the colder it gets.  Switching to biodiesel helped a little (at least with the smell of the cloud).  Unlike the problems you are describing, it runs fine when warm and even when first started after the first few few seconds if I set the hand throttle to about 1200rpm.  And the white smoke goes away after it warms up a little.  I suspected bad glow plugs, but they seem to be good (based on the fact that it won't start without alot of cranking without using the glow plugs, and starts right away with them).  It's a newly rebuilt motor too.

Let me know if anyone figures this out.

Another thread that sort of addresses this -- from what I've heard the factory settings on timing is pretty conservative, and can be advanced quite a bit more, if you have an exhaust gas temp guage.   Perhaps factory timing is a little too retarded in cold start conditions??????  The cold start is advanced more than normal operating right?  So if it's not working correctly, it would be more retarded than it should be when starting, and produce more smoke?  Am I understanding this right?
