Is my engine original or swapped?

I have been told that you can look up the car's VIN # on the internet and find the engine code to tell if the engine in the car is the original or not, but I can't find a website that does that.  Does anybody know how I can find this info?  It's a 1981 diesel Rabbit.

what engines in it?    the only part of the engine code your vin will tell you is the first 2 letters, vws aren't like muscle cars they don't have numbers matching engines.

If you look at the build sticker in the trunk it'll list the engine and tranny code
