Cold start lever?? Can I do without it?
« on: May 05, 2009, 03:47:46 am »
Right I put a 1.6TD engine in my Skoda pickup, being a newer vehicle it has electrical cold start items on the pump.

I got the engine already out of a car so never got a cold start cable.

Firstly what way is the lever when not in cold start mode, towards the pump gear or towards the gearbox?

Secondly, lowest temps we see here is maybe -2C assuming the engine is good and glow plugs good and I set the timing up correctly, will I need the lever?  :)

With pimped GP, I never use mine. In fact, I never connected it to a cable for my diesel Caravan project.

-2C you won't need the cold start.  i've used it on my 1.6 at around -10C or so, but like arb said if your glows are all working, it should start unless you have low compression.

toward the pump gear is cold start off.

If your pump has the fast idle as well, then it's worth hooking it up.

You've tried moving it with the engine idling? It could just need an adjustment

Never had to use my cold start for starting..   at -15 F  (-26c ??) and no block heater it fired right off..  I did however pull it on to help with idling till it warmed up...  The fast idle is quite nice..

Hmm... starting to think I should get a compression tester... or maybe I need some more advance...

Now that it's over 10 degrees I don't need the cold start lever at all, but I definitely get ugly starts when it's below +5 or so without it... Even now sometimes I'll give it a quick tug to make her fire up nice then pop it back in as soon as she starts.

Right now my LDA is almost resting against my injector lines, so I need to advance a tooth on my timing belt if I want anything more...

Tried it for real, it does work, not much but some.... It dosn't change the timing at all does it? The pump i've got doesn't have a cold start lever, i wish it did though. Probley no way to convert it to having one?
