Wiring Issues....

I have a 81 rabbit diesel pickup.  Origionally had the 1.6na diesel, then a 1.6 gas engine, back to a 1.6na diesel. I didn't do the swaps.  

What I need to know is which fuse panel I have.  It has all the wiring for the gas engine and the diesel.  

Do they share fuse panels from the factory, with all the wiring?  Even in the Haynes manuel they show the wiring for the gas engine under the diesel section.

Diesels don't have fuel pumps....right?  Just have to make sure I am not crazy.....

I believe the actual panel is the same for both, as is they both have a spot for a fuel pump fuse, it's just not used on the diesel.
I think the diesels have less wiring, not sure though, if you look under the dash it's a real mess, maybe lots of it is for the body. But no, gas engines need more wires under the hood. Hope this helped a little bit at least.

Yes.  That does help a little.  Thanks.  I just don't know with this thing, it has had both engines in it.  I has the wiring for the fuel pump fuse and the wiring for the fuel pump relay.  

I am just trying to eliminate as much wiring as possible.  I have already rewired the starting and charging system, headlights, fuel shut off solenoid, glow plugs, and radiator fan.  Pretty much everything under the hood.  I really want to eliminate any wiring I don't need, so I will be easy to diagnose problems in the future.

Does anyone know where the coolant temp sensor and the wire coming from the head for the glow plug sensor light plugs into the wiring harness???

Are you experiencing a particular problem that requires an understanding of the electrical system?

I would be willing to bet that if you look by the fuel tank and see two wires dangling,
(i.e. not connected to anything)
they should be the old fuel pump wires.
The only things that should be going to the back of the truck would be:
Lights,
Fuel level sender,
and gas fuel pump.

Lights and level should be all factory (same for both gas & diesel)
but the pump wiring at the tank
would not have been there originally,
and would be the visibly different wiring not connected to anything at the fuel tank.

Once you find that end, pull it back to the fusebox, and remove there.

That may or may not help.

I am rewiring everything under the hood and I forgot where the coolant temp sensor goes into the wiring harness of the body.........

There is more than one coolant sensors. I have 5 caddies, 2 with engines in them. There is a sensor in the rad. and one of the hoses from the head and in the coolant port in the drivers side of the head. Which one are you talking about, and what do you need to know?

Well which sensor controls the coolant temp sensor for the coolant temp gauge?  And where should the wire from that sensor go? (what connector? color wire?)

Also if you know what sensor contols the glow plug light on the dash and the connector/wire locations that would be a great help.

first of all, burn your haynes and buy a robert bentley. there should be a lift pump in your tank or just outside it (not sure how they did it on the MK1). if you have a MK2 idi in there then im pretty sure your missing a wire for one of your coolant sensors as the MK1 only had the one in the rad (only there to tell the fan to turn on/off) and one on the side of the head. and im quite sure the wire in plain brown.

My 81 caddy was gas and I had a 82 rabbit car diesel I unpluged the diesel harness at the fuse box area and pluged into the gas fuse box and was good to go . the glow plug sensor on my truck is at the houseing where the top rad hose is and the wire is solid lite blue the dash temp wire is at the heater hose side of the head and is lite blue with a yellowish tracer in it ( brown wires are generaly ground wires I found)

Thank you madrogers.  Do you know which connector (connector color?) the coolant temp gauge wire is in?  You have already helped me a lot.  When I get off work I am going to investigate this lite blue with yellow tracer....  Also on mine the coolant temp wire I believe had 2 wires.  There is a spot for two wires to go on the heater hose coming off the driver side of the head.

the end of the wire on mine is just a brass push on clip for both connetors (glow and dash temp)
If it has two wires on one connetor it must be a newer stlye harness, 84 plus? the only resone two wires would betogther is a sensor and ground wire and brown wires i found to be grounds. I found that if you put the blue/yellow wire to ground it will pin the guage to the hot side and the glow plugs light will not come on (relay thinks the engine is hot) if you ground the blue wire i found.
