Labour Of Love...
« on: May 04, 2009, 04:25:43 pm »

Two days of cleaning: 2 coats of primer: 10 coats of engine enamel.  When I brought it to my machinist today he could hardly take his eyes off of her.  Me, I had to get it out of the house or I'd never get anything else done!  He will overbore it by .020.

Yes, I DO like the green!

Nothing substitutes for mechanical soundness...doesn't matter how nice it looks!!!

The engine is all spec'd and chek'd already and good to go....you're right, gotta get that done first.

...maybe I'll go get it and paint it green???

;)

I like as well.

I'll add to libby's post a bit.

I've found that once it's bored and honed it REALLY needs to be cleaned out good. If you take it to the machinist before you paint it you don't have to worry about the paint getting damaged say if he was to give it a bath which he should after a bore and hone to make sure ALL the metal shavings were removed.
Taking it in all pretty may cause him to skip this very important step.

My own refurb'd 1.5 is Chrysler pale blue. I felt like such a traitor, painting a VW engine that colour. :p The feeling has passed, obviously, helped by the fact that I got all four cans of paint for $0.50 each. :D

Yea with this build the first thing i did was bead blast the block and every other part that belongs anywhere near it. Then the machine work. After all that and before i was ready to slip pistons in it, it got a healthy coat of zink cromate primer and then the green. Then after a pallet of black paint i had a fresh (and prrredy) engine.
