2001 polo 90hp tdi, turbo from golf fits or not? ALH GT1749V
« on: April 28, 2009, 08:07:46 am »
hi folks,

As above - just wondered if anyone has had both in their hand.  I'm talking the polo/ibiza/cordoba/caddy 90hp tdi (ALH) with the VNT Garrett, the same engine as used in Octavia's and Golfs (pre-pd) and same type of turbo as on the 110hp version.  Not the earlier wastegated GT15!

Part numbers don't match up but that doesn't mean a lot, if it was a golf/octavia I'd not have a concern, however the 2000-2002 polo/ibiza has the engine mounting at the back by the turbo and I don't know if it has a different manifold because of that, or if it's simply 'clocking' of the cold side to make it line up.  Or even if the manifold is different, if the core of the turbo is the same?

I did note that the oil feed pipe is a different style to the golf, but where it comes from/goes to is the same.

If anyone has experience with this I'd appreciate it.

Cheers, Greg.

the turbo on the polo and ibiza TDI's with the Mk3 style mounts are centralised to avoid the alloy bracket, I tried a Mk4 golf turbo onto my Ibiza Sport and it fouled the mount!!

Fantastic!  This is the kind of info I was looking for.  So tell me, is the whole turbo more toward the gearbox end of the engine?  Or do you mean the cold side was rotated so the outlet port didn't foul the mounting?

I'm 99% certain that the turbo 'core' eg the turbo unit split from the manifold, leaving the VNT vanes in the manifold, could be swapped between the golf/polo styles (using GT1749V in both cases).

Did you try that/have any comments?

Cheers, Greg.

the whole unit is towards the gearbox side sou you would have to gut it or use a passat turbo and manifold

I understand!  Thanks, that's great information.  I'm trying to get hold of the correct one, however if I can't I'll 'gut' it as you say and hope that the cartridge (as the usa guys call it, the centre housing, turbo shaft/blades & the cold side complete, slid out of the exhaust manifold) from a golf GT1749V is interchangable.  It certainly looks so at a glance, the actuator etc being identical.

Ah well, fingers crossed.

Greg.

i dont think the cores will fit , i tryed to fit a vnt 17 core in to a vnt 15 and the sleve in the vnt 15 was to small to take the vnt core , the bit at the end of the exhaust impeller , even tryed swaping cores from a vnt to a kp39  it did not fit eather , cant rember why  :D

Interesting, but I think we are talking about two GT1749V which unless I'm missing something should have the same size internals/impellas, just one has a different shaped exhaust manifold.  So swapping the cartridge but leaving the original VNT vanes/manifold.  Not trying to change size of the cartridge/type of turbo!

Is there a GT1749V that is stand alone and not part of the entire manifold?
Where do I get one if it exists. (I'm in Canada)
