I need to work on the brakes on my 85 Golf, so now is a good time for improvements.
I would like either a set of 9.4" vented discs and their calipers or all the pieces from a Mk3 to convert to 10.1"
In good condition.

To convert to vented rotors you only need to change the pads. The calipers are the same.

Yes. That's what I was trying to say. I'm 99% sure. I haven't personally done this so I can't say 100% but from what I've read that should be all you need. I'm sure someone will confirm or prove me wrong though if I am.

So now you need to talk about pads. My choices are 1-Carbotech 2-Hawk HPS 3- Axxis Ultimate. Also look into slotted or drilled rotors. Having to stop 10 feet shorter could save your life someday.

I may be inaccurate, but I do believe that the really early Mk2 (85-87)
have a caliper carrier that is one piece with the bearing carrier.

This means you can upgrade to vented rotors (drilled or slotted if you like)
with just a set of rotors and pads.
You cannot, however upgrade the diameter of rotor without getting the complete steering knuckle.

I recommend the G60 set up from a corrado (still 4X100! - 11")
(requires 15" wheels)

Either way, i recommend ATS power slots
and Carbotech panther pads.
That is about as good as it gets for reasonable monies in the mk2/3 range.
Do beware that you brakes now need to get up to temperature to work well, and your pad/rotor replacement ratio is now 1/1.
But that set of brakes kill. Been running them off and on for 10 years!

Good news!
I think Ill go with a 9.4" set up. Then I'm able to use stock steelies with winter tyres.
Mind you, a G60 set up does sound good. 15" steeles with a low profile tyre.
I guess thats why I started this in the buy/sell section. There are no breakers yards anywhere near me.

Well, if the goal is to do the vented rotor upgrade, you will be buying all new parts. Shipping would kill the value, and its bad mojo to re-use old brake parts. (so I dont know if this board can help you... for new OEM parts, send a PM to user: "Myke_W" and he can hook you up with good parts for 10-20% under list price.)

If you are looking for G60 knuckles,
maybe someone here is sitting on them,
but I bought my calipers and carriers for like $100.

I would hold out for a set of complete used knuckles. ($100-200)
Add pads and rotors, and you are ready to bolt on!
Literally three bolts and your rolling!

And always rebuild used calipers!

Properly working 9.4s will easily lock up the tires on a mk2. There is no need to go to bigger brakes in my mind. The only advantage that I see of larger brakes is the ability to disipate more heat faster. Which would be good if you lived in the mountains or took the car to the track.

Ok, Just to clarify;
Solid 9.4" rotors are 12mm thick and vented rotors are 20mm.
The difference between the two is accommodated in the stock caliper by thinner pads ( GTI pads?)
Have I got that right before I start spending money?

I installed brand new oem GTI rotors, and reused my old pads, as they were in good shape and worn to GTI size. :lol:

X2 on GTi pads and rotors.

Burn (as usual) is totally right as well.
Any VW front brake will lock the front wheels,
but as you go up in size you gain heat dissipation ability:
I fade my 9.4 solid rotor / stock pad combo the first or second hard brake from 80 mph.
I am really really hard on brakes though.
I also seem to chew through motor mounts.
I wonder if there is a common problem with every car I have owned??
(yeah, yeah, I know... loose nut behind the wheel?)

i used a set of vented rotors for an audi GT coupe. they fit right on my mk2 and like him, my pads were worn thin enough to fit them perfectly. and they will lock up my wide low pros no problem.. and there damn near 8 inches wide.
