The GTD lives again! but i've got a few questions :)
« on: April 20, 2009, 07:45:39 am »
Hi

I've made a few posts recently but thought I would start another one so I can reel off some questions :). First though thank you for being so helpful, this forum is such a great resource and the people are great.

So today I put the timing belt on using the right tools and feeler gauges, the injection pump is at the correct mark at TDC and the belt is the proper tension.
To get fuel running I loosened the nuts at the injectors and turned the engine over for a bit. Then I screwed the back and started it. I had forgot to put one of the wires on the glow plugs so the car ran really bad and I almost s**t my self. Any way I connected the glow plugs and it fired fine , started off by missing a bit then after about a minute settled though it really smoked to begin with then the smoke reduced  though still a bit there.

To make it easier I'm just going to list the questions I have about it:

1. I didn't properly warm it up so havent done the next torque sequence should this be done as soon as possible or can I leave it until the car is timed properly?

2. The smoke that came out was whitish and smelt like unburned and burned diesel at the same time, the car does sound more diesely but it has new injectors. I'm thinking the best thing to do would be to either borrow a timing guage or get some one to time it up properly?

3. The head did seem to get hot quicker than I would have expected, it only ran for a max of 2-3 minutes, though for most of this the water pump was not spinning because no belt. Would it get hot quick due to the water pump or could wrong ignition timing be causing overheating?

4. It missed a bit when I first started it, then settled into idle but occasionaly it missed slightly, plus there were a few air bubbles in the return pipe, is this normal?

Thanks
Will

Timing it up properly is always the first thing to do.. if it is not timed properly symptoms you are seeing could be caused by the timing alone, thus not making for an accurate troubleshoot. :)

the head will get pretty hot even with the water pump turning as the coolant is just circulating the block before it reaches temp to open the thermostat to go in to the rad, so that's reasonably normal.

if it missed abit when you started, and then again after you saw some air bubbles come from the pump, that is likely your problem.. the tiniest of air bubbles that enter Pre-pump will cause hiccups and puffs of grey-ish smoke (from my experience anyways). Tighten down any fuel lines and see if this still occurs. There is air getting in somewhere..

unfortunately i cant help you with the head bolt deal.. not a clue about them :P So i wont even try to fill your mind with my B.S lol

Goodluck with it! :P

I got the timing set up today and warmed the car up. Then torqued the head bolts.
It was a bit missy at first but once it warmed up it runs really well. I've just driven it about 15 miles and it sounds absolutly fine, so i'm really happy.

I did notice a slight bubbling from number 2 injector at the threads so I think i'll torque the injectors up a bit more.

I have only warm started it but does make a small bit of whitish smoke when it idles for a bit then after its been driven there is no smoke at all, plus it takes about two turns of the engine to start it when its warm which it didnt used to.
I did notice that the turbo spools up a bit later i.e 2250-2500 instead of 2000-2250, doesnt seem much but there is a difference. Does anyone know the causes of these?
