• Hello,, name is Brad,,  My dad finally passed down his 92' Jetta TD ECOdiesel to me.
  
  I have a couple years ago rebuilt the engine,, with new bearings, rings and had the head resurfaced with a new gasket 3 notch.
  
  The car has run into a state of disrepair since my dad owned it,, needs motor mounts bad! and it was having a problem with 1 injector not firing and not sure if its the injector or pump (dad tried to put anything possible in the tank that would burn!)
  
  Since the rebuild I have been reading a bit on what performance upgrades I can do and realized that perhaps I shouldnt have used the 3 notch gasket.
  
  I have a list of questions that perhaps someone can point me in the right direction..
  
  1:  I am going to purchase a new head from www.dieselvw.net as the injector sealing surfaces are trashed because the sealing washers were installed upside down and had to be drilled out,, and thus its now a problem. are these heads decent? aftermarket? I'm also going to purchase the GTD?? or the injectors with the mercedes nozzles? are these better?
  
  2: I would like to this time around use the MLS Headgasket that I have heard about and a set of ARP headbolts. does anyone know the correct part numbers or a place to get these from? I've heard different stories about which gasket to use and am a lil confused.
  
  3:How can I test my injector pump to see if its the culprit or has a weak port?? and are there any upgrades to the ECO pump that I can do to make it the same as a standard TD pump.
  
  4: I plan to add a intercooler and maybe up the boost a bit but I would like to keep it reliable is there maybe a list of things I can do on the cheap and reliable?
  
  5: do they sell a down pipe upgrade? I plan on getting rid of the probably plugged converter on the car and was planning on having a shop pipe me a new exhaust (should be cheap!)
  
  Lastly: with upgrade does anyone have video's or 1/4 mile times of cars that have been upgraded.

• Is you're getting a new head, make it a 1.9 AAZ one. There's no downside, it's better in every possible way. And a direct bolt-on too.
  
  A good intercooler, a decent dowpipe and pump fettling will see you onto the far side of 100 hp. As it's an ECO TD, a turbo injection pump would be a wise upgrade if you want more power than that. With a turbo pump, you can get 120-130 hp with no further mods other than zero-cost pump mods.
  A T3 or K24 turbo will add about 20 hp to that maximum power capability.
  At that point a full exhaust system will be a must though.

• 1) I can't comment on the heads, no experience. As for injectors I'd personally stay away from merc nozzles. They have been rumored to knock the precups out of heads, although that could have been a host of other problems.
  
  2) Get the headgasket for the AAZ. It is bolt on for your motor but the head and the block have to be STRAIGHT for it to seal properly. It is less forgiving then the fiber gasket.
  
  3) Loosen the injection line and see if it's squirting fuel out. If it is, the pump is probably ok. Since there is only 1 plunger, it's unlikely to have a single bad port, unless something has gotten stuck in the delivery valve. Most likely it is an injector problem.
  
  4) Read the FAQ on making your 1.6TD faster. It'll cover all the basics for cheap upgrades.
  
  5) 935racer used to sell one, but I think he has stopped selling the IDI ones and has moved on to selling to KermaTDI directly which focuses mainly on TDI stuff.
  
  A draw back to the AAZ head is a lower compression ratio, which can cause starting problems if you have low compression.
