So my girlfriend has a 2000 jetta TDI. Well she went to start it up this morning and it was running like it was missing. Really sluggish and sputtering. Well then it started to make a ticking sound. I cleared the code but that did nothing (i didn't thing it would) I drove the car up my drive way and it has no power. It almost sounds like it has an exhaust leak but why would that cause it to run like it was missfiring.
So here is what I think it could be.
1. The injector could be bad in the first cylinder.
2. Water in the fuel
3. I have no clue.
The car just had 3200 in work donw to it, new timing belt, injector pump and a bunch of other stuff done to it.
Let me knwo what you guys think
thanks

Could be some dirt got into a line when the pump was replaced, or bits of metal from the pump if it was rebuilt improperly ? How soon after all the work did it start happening ? If it was right after i would go back to where she had the work done and first be nice and then if they won't claim responsiblity, then get louder. I would say 90 % of the time when things like this happen it's because of something that was done at the service ,repair etc.

Or it could be Murphy's law and an injector has failed.

Well it has been like 2 months since the work was done. Would it be the injector pump though. I mean it still runs so... I was thinking it is the injector on the #1 cylinder.
I hope to **** its not the pump neither of us have money to replace it and I don't have the knowledge to rebuild it.
Any other ideas.

you could try moving the injector #1 to cyl #2 to see if the problem changes. if it doesn't, then it could be a delivery valve.

I might give that a try. See I don't know much about TDI's. So if the delivery valve is bad then does that mean it will need a complete new pump or can the valves be bought separately?

delivery valves can be bought separately (thank god) but i do believe that they could probably be cleaned as well... with something like lubro moly diesel purge. but in any case, this is the problem you want. as injectors are very expensive, but new nozzles & calibration isn't.
here's a link to see what they look like. i don't think this will work on your pump though. too bad because $5 is in most people's price range these days... the quality of the parts are very questionable though so beware.

Ok I'm a little confused. Sorry about that. But your saying that you think the problem is with the delivery valve and not the injector?
when I was trying to figure out what was wrong i loosened the injector line on the first injector and it seemed to make the ticking a little less noticeable. But it did not go away completely.
Here is my main question now. I am trying to eliminate all the possibilities that the problem is not.
Is it more likely that is is the pump (delivery valve) or the injectors?
At first I thought that it might have slipped the timing but then it would have bent valves and be making a whole shi* ton of noise. I only thought this because of how loud the ticking is but then again a fuel knock can be pretty loud.
I am going o drain the tank just to make sure they didnt put gas in it. She swears that it was diesel that they put in it. I sniffed the fuel and it didnt smell like gas.

You could switch injectors first, see if that changes cylinders or not, same as the delivery valves. Do them one at a time and be careful not to mix anything.

Alright sounds like a plan. The only thing is I cleared the code and it has yet to come back on. I have a feeling that the CEL code is not the main issue because it can on way after it started all the problems of not running and then the ticking noise so I'm just stuck right now on where to start.

So i called the shop that did all the work. Well he says its an injector. So i guess i will start with that...
