while i wait for my bentley... timing marks

Ok so apparently buying a bentley off ebay was dumb...

Pulling the 1.6td out of my 91 jetta; for disasembly / mini-rebuild (maybe a giles pump) then to get swapped into another vehicle...

Going to rip it out this weekend, get it degreased to start the rebuild... Do I need to make some timing reference marks, or is it fairly easy to set the timing while re-assembling?

thanks in advance,

Andy

Without the tranny bolted on you won't be able to use the stock timing marks on the flywheel... there's an official VW tool to use in this circumstance but it's $$$$.

Here's some pictures here of what the factory marks look like:

Otherwise you can use piston protrusion as a guide to finding TDC, although it's a bit tricky on an IDI since the pre-combustion chambers get in the way a bit... a long thin screwdriver will snake thru.

I know some guys doing this swap (vw td into zuki / toyota (4runner for me)) have remarked the crank onto one of the front pulleys... probably should think that through myself... Anyone suggest where it might be best to make the mark on the front so it'll be visible later?

So basically it sounds like it wont be the end of the world if I just rip'er out, even if I need to order a few more tools to time it later...

And now it's not looking good for getting ripped out this weekend; blew the knee apart again last night
