1979 rabbit interlock relay bypass...
« on: April 04, 2009, 07:10:34 am »
Hello, everyone.
I recently purchased one of the last interlock relays from a VW dealership in RI...At least that is what my dealer here in Indiana said. :) Im trying to keep the car as complete and original as I can. This relay will lock out the starter if the seat belts are not fastened.

This morning I was pushed awake by my lady because the rabbit would not turn over. She was late for class  I asked if she went through all the steps to get the car started on this slightly cold morning. She said yes!

Well it ended up being this $140 relay. I bypassed the relay by taking it out and ran a jumper from the Black/Red starter wire to the White/Red wire that I assume is wired to the ignition, because the car turned right over.

Would you guys suggest me just keeping it this way?

that seems like a $140 piece of crap :P

There are times when you want to start the car without your belt on.. lol so its only for startup.. thats lame.. like you can undo your seatbelt after you start it up and it will run.. Leave it this way.. if you ever try and sell it for some MONEY then maybe replace it. but as a driver. thats a PITA :)

keep the relay , it is a great theft detrent, who would think of putting the seat belt on to steal a car , Your problem is probley not the relay but the seat belt switch/ wiring my US spec rabbit had the wires in the door jams broken  so the p/o just twisted the two wires together to bypass the system I reconnected the wires to get the buzzer and light to work so it would pass a inspection I would check the wireing 1st.

Since it's a MK1 I'd be surprised if it was anything but wiring

Do you have the wiring diagram?

Yes, I have a diagram, but it just ends up driving me crazy... Brand new fuse box, relay, GP relay... The works...

Well at least now I know how to steal a VW Diesel L... At one point while trying to find the point that would let me start with the ignition, there was a port that would crank the engine over and not stop cranking until I turned the key back. There was another that would start the car without the key right when I put the jumper wire into the terminal. (thats the winner...)

But then again, I would never want to steel a car. I do live by the golden rule for the most part.

Off on another tangent, I want to re-wire my fog lights... Can the power supply be direct or does it have to be fused??? Its not working direct...

How are they wired now? spliced in with the headlights? or do they have there own switch?

Best would be to run a relay'd system. One wire wit ha fuse from the battery, one wire to a switch that is 12v switched with the ignition, The wires that go to the Fogs, and grounds Simple eh? lol

In that last diagram, 85 is ground and 86 is hot

Also, there is a metal jumper that replaces the interlock relay that is also stock. Kind of like the jumper that is there if you do not have delay type wiper setup.

Where could I get that jumper?
But I noticed since I applied this jumper in place of the relay, power is constant to everything. When I turn off the key the radio will stay on, the wipers will still go and i can glow the plugs with out the key being turned. ( OR at lease the little green light shines when switched)

Does anyone think this is wrong? Maybe bad? It seems to work fine if I remember to turn everything off.
