I have roughly 700+ km on my rings and valve stems.
in that 700km it drank about 1/3rd of it's oil. (not all at once, this is accumulative. I get that measure from topping it up twice once 1/2cm below the max line on the dip and again today at 2/3rds the dip stick.
When i first start it up and drive a bit i can see it burns pretty blue.
the mileage has 1.5X since running 30 litres through it. I'm at roughly 37mpg (I THINK)... probably less. 32-37... (it used to be 20mpg with the old head)
What kind of oil consumption do you reckon i could see in the future? and for how long...
the intake hose POST turbo has heaps of oil in it. Less than pre-rebuild but still a size able amount. I suspect turbo.
Ideas? Solutions?

sounds to me like you need to seat those rings... which means beating that whore til she bleeds no more oil. :twisted:
but seriously just keep topping off the oil, and take it on accelerations from 50kph to about 100 kph in 5th with full throttle. (at least thats what i think the recommendation is...)

I don't remember beating the snot out of a motor as good break-in technique. I've always liked using stop and go in town type if driving. Engine RPM is always varied. Use a non synthetic oil for the first 5,000 miles, then switch to synthetic.

I think the conventional wisdom is if the rings are not seated in the first 30 minutes of engine running they're unlikely to seat ever, so we'll hope this is not the case. :wink:
At 700 km your engine is a long way from broken-in, however, and you can expect oil consumption (and fuel consumption) to get better and better... although what you're describing from an oil consumption perspective does sound a bit excessive.
Two questions to promote further pondering:
- you're sure there are no big leaks ? Valve cover ? A forgotten seal somewhere ? If you park the engine overnight on big piece of clean cardboard what spots do you find?
- is the smoke blue to start, particularly if the engine has sat overnight, and then clears quickly, or are you leaving a blue haze pretty much always? Blue after an overnight sit is usually valve seals... you did protect the seals from the keeper grooves when you installed them (I remember it came up in your build thread, don't recall the outcome) ?

5,000 miles. Ok that answers one of my Q's about switching oil.
Trust me, i am beating it.
50-100 in 5th at WOT would BLOW my boost hoses !!!!(i also can't go 50 in 5th because of my bigger tires) and shred my CV's. hahaha i do do 60-100 in 4th sometimes at about 2/3rd trottle and hit 20psi. But that's only like 2 seconds of driving :wink: I haven't been giving it much WOT lately because of the worn CVs vibrating the inside of the car.
I really hope that my case isn't one of never seating rings...
The blue only occurs after sitting over night yes. it clears after running (driving) for ... about 2 blocks. OR if i rev it quite a bit.
Still cold starts very white (but instantly) but clears after driving 500 yards.[by cold i mean 10 degrees or colder, so not really that cold...]
I'd really love to do a comp test if i had one. AND get a gauge on it to see what the pump is timed to.
PS. Definitely no big leaks. Fixed em... actually... after fixing them i dont recall topping it up. a lot of my loss can be accounted for with those leaks now i think about it. DOH. But definitely not all because it does burn quite blue like i said. the intake has a hefty amount of oil in it.
the blue does go away for certain after driving. No oil smell what so ever. I did not protect the valve stem seals in my ignorance at the time. But i was very very careful. They definitely didn't get significantly damaged... they were made of a pretty tough rubber i remember. I wasn't worried about them getting hurt from the grooves. I used scotch tape but it didn't seem any different to me.
post post script,
just as a little note... rolling backwards at a slow walking pace, in 1st, revving it up to what i would say would be 1/2 of the rpm band and dumping the clutch (i don't care about my cv's anymore... i'm replacing them anyways) it will rip the tires RIGHT to the red line determined by my solid gov. shim instantaneously and hold it there no prob... the rev curve is basically a power relation, RPM vs. time.
the car just sat there frying the tires (my big 165/65/r15's) with no e-brake and moved forward maybe ... 2 meters tops in 4 full seconds. I recommend a solid sleeve in the gov. I should take mine out again sometime and really see what i did because i don't remember entirely. I remember putting a solid sleeve in there and removing 1 of the springs. Even just revving it in my driveway it will shoot straight up with slight lag in the first 600rpm when it bogs a little. slight black cloud results. I can make about 3 psi just revving it in this fashion. With my T3 utilizing absolutely NO boost control i have never seen a black cloud behind me except for during spool time which would be about 2 seconds. Even the burn out didn't make any fuel rich black smoke.

Did you check the cylinders before installing rings? A cheap way is to install rings and then poor gas in each cylinder, and leave over night. Check to see if any gas has gone down. You can also move the crank so that the pistons are in different positions.
Mine was cause by improperly installed guides and valve seals. Took it into Lordcon machine shop across from Bingo hall in Abby and they re did it properly, and showed me the mistake the other shop had made. Runs perfect now. Was consuming 1 liter in 50 kms before.
I'll keep a look out for your blue smoke. I live over by yale school on Hyatt place, drop around one day.

the blue is going away with more timing advance.
The oil consumption is no where near 1L/50km.
