engine running cold
« on: August 27, 2005, 10:57:50 am »
Hey my coolant flange line broke yesterday and spilled coolant all over the place. So I made it home replaced the flange, did and oil change and air filter aswell as I just picked up the car and had no idea when they had last been changed. Anyways I was super busy last night and after fixing the problem didn't get a chance to test it out. So this morning I took it for a little spin and realized when it started overheated that I had been an idiot and forgot to top up the coolant. I pulled over and my brother brought my some took all four litres and afterwards ran fine except it ran extremely cold. Drove at around 90km/h for 15 mins and it got around 1/4 temp below 70* and it wouldn't rise any higher just wondering if anyone had any idea why this might be. It ran at half before the problem so I have no idea if this is normal with a diesel or not. Any help would be awesome. Thanks and sorry for the long post

I recently changed my headgasket and my car only gets up to the 1/4 mark now as well.  The only time I've been able to get it hot was going up an extremely long hill climb at low speeds.  I've been kind of curious about this as well, so I hope someone chimes in with their opinions on this.

Ya I have been told that this is how they are supposed to run but I am wondering why it ran so much hotter before? Thanks for the reply

Be sure you've burped all the air out of the system, guys. Air trapped in the cooling system can lead to low temp readings.

Also, replace your engine's thermostat. If the thermostat sticks wide open the engine will read permanently low water temps. This won't hurt anything, but the engine won't develop full power and economy.

Don't know if you have a bleeder, no info in your bio...

The thermostat stuck open one day in my old Ford truck, and I thought I'd freeze to death on the way to work. Evidently it had opened the night before and didn't 'unstick'. It was like the water would never heat up, even driving 60 mph. Don't worry. Just get a new thermo, expecially if it's more than a couple of years old.

Again thanks for the help. I will replace the thermostat tomorrow. As for the car it is a 94 golf diesel. I think 1.9 turbo. Thanks again

Mine has shown 1/4 on the temp guage twice and both times it was the t-stat stuck open.  Replaced and works like a champ.
