fuel filler neck question
« on: March 28, 2009, 01:54:09 pm »
Just curious if any one knows if the fuel filler neck on a 1981 gas rabbit truck would work on a diesel?  I bought a caddy with tank and every single fuel line removed and am trying to piece back together.  I have the fuel tank and just need to piece together all the plumbing.

Thanks

diesel fuel filler necks are bigger diameter generally. because a diesel pump has a bigger nozzle on it. im pretty sure the gas rabbits have that restrictor that makes only gas nozzles work in them. someone else chime in and correct me if im wrong?

I remember seeing something maybe on here about modifying the gas filler neck to accept the larger diesel nozzle. I could be wrong But I am almost sure I heard it.

When I finished my conversion (Vanagon), I drove a few blocks to the Shell station to fill up.  Surprise!  Diesel nozzle wouldn't fit ...

There is a metal restrictor "cup" that was pressed into the plastic filler neck.  After removing the filler neck, I hacked out the cup.  It was pretty much a PITA ...

Yes, in 1981 they were all No-lead gassers with the restructor to block the Leaded gas nozzle... diesel is sometimes at a car station the same size as the Leaded, but at all truck stops it is even larger... lately they even have a ring at the tip so the truckers can put the nozzle in their 200 gallons tanks and it will not slip out. This prvented my PowerStroke Super Duty from easily filling  up at the stops with this ring.  So, you should remove the restrictor completely like I did on my conversion. Then even a truck stop will be inviting. While you are at it, you might verify they didn't put a float ball at the base of the tube.

There's no float ball.  The filler neck comes right out once you remove the phillips-head screws (3 IIRC ?) and the molded plastic trim cup.

I *love* that Rumsfeld clip!  It's hillarious!  How can I get it?

my jetta had a filler neck integrated into the fuel tank...it's all one piece.

you can just right click the rumsfeld GIF and paste it into your sig....but most forums except this one DONT allow animated gif's in your sig...

Thanks for all the replies.  There was a caddy gas filler neck and hoses on ebay that went for $10.50.  I missed it though cause I only read the first reply before it ended, I'll keep loking though.

Anybody have a parts truck?

when i converted my caddy from gas to diesel i just cut out the nozzel restrictor plate with a sharp chisel and used a die grinder and burr to clean it up. the rest of the system worked fine.
