Well my son and I went to a Painball field about 15 miles from our house and when we were out there having fun shooting at people with the paintball guns, low and behold I see a 1980's VW GTI in the middle of the paintball field amongst all the other old cars and trucks that they were using as obstacles.
This GTI was in pretty decent conditon, no body rust but it would need at least $1000 to get it back on the road again. Anyhow, I noticed it had the snowflake rims on it and I asked the kid running the joint if he would sell me the rims/tires. After several minutes of poking and prodding, he told me to make him an offer. I told him $20 and I would do all the work.
To my surprise he said "Yes" So, I spent about 30 minutes jacking the car up at each corner and removing the lugs with the original lug wrench. Then after getting the wheels home came the real fun. 5 years of setting in a field and being shot by millions of paintballs had left a nice film on the rims that took me several hours of scrubbing with a pressure washer, SOS pads, tooth brushes, paint thinner and Goof Off.
Well the front two tires have lots of tread and the rear are pretty much bald, but they all hold air and I have put over 500 miles on them since the purchase.
The rims have some curb rash and one of them looks to be bent (but I am going to put it on the back to minimize wheel hop) But all in all, I think it improves the look of the car.
Here is the before pic:
And here is the after pic:
What do you think?
Oh, the tire size is 190/60/14
If anyone has that size and they wanna sell em to me cheap, feel free to shoot me a PM. (Willing to travel to make purchase!)

What do I think???
I wish I would have been playing paintball the day before you got there.
A set of snowflakes (and a set of Pirelli's "P" model) are the only VW rims I never was able to find.
And I still wish I had some Snowflakes!!!!!!!!!
Good for you.

there's some demand for interior parts from a rabbit GTI. This one's probably all wrecked though, I imagine.
Same with the front airdam?

Actually, this car was running when he parked it in the paintball field a few years ago!!!!
I was going to offer him $500 for the whole car, but I am a poor married with children type. So, I just got the rims/tires.
The body is straight as an arrow, and he says it is a turbo. (Did they make turbo gas GTI's in the early 80's?
Anyway, it has a 5 speed in it and the 3 gauge cluster right in front of the shifter.
Black exterior w/ red interior.
I can provide exact location if anyone is interested in it.

if that's a complete callaway turbo system installed on that rabbit, then it's a gem! A must restore, or at least, part out to people happy to have said parts.
Definitely worth a return trip with a digital camera. Take a look under the hood. Please!

oem snowflakes looks sweet on mk2's.
plus ->
larger footprints allows the car to handle faster speeds with (less tire squeal) on long sweeping freeway on-ramp turns.

Yeah, I have alot of money in those steelies! I took them to a local paint and body shop and had them sandblasted, primed, painted with paint code "PS2" (2008 Jeep Silver Metallic).
They charged me $40/rim!
So, I actually have more money in the steelies than the snowflakes, but I really like the way the snowflakes look and the 14" tires give the car a wider look than the 13"s that are on the steelies.

Thanks for the accolade! I was beginning to think that I was the only one here from the "HOOSIER!"
Were are you from and what are you driving?
By the way, I am going to start a build thread in the near future on this car. I have big plans.
Body work to fix dents and new paint (original color) and I would like to add a turbo!

Burn your Money,
Here is a little more inspiration for ya:
By the way, did I mention that I picked this car up from the 2nd owner 2 1/2 years ago for a $1000?
All I need now is for som1 to make me a deal on a turbo set-up so I can make this 1.6 N/A run like it was meant to!
As far as the GTI in the paintball field, I am heading back there this weekend (If the weather permits) I will get that hood opened up and check to see if it does indeed have a turbo.
Did they make a turbo GTI in "83" in the color black?
If anything, I am gonna pull the GTI steering wheel from it and put on my lil Diesel. (That should make it go a lil faster, don't ya think?)

Thanks for the pictures. Maybe I'll actually get around to installing it
No turbo GTIs. I think the 1.8T was VWs first turbo on a gasser
