86golf no headlights
« on: March 22, 2009, 10:42:14 am »
Hello all.
I picked up a little golf that someone decided to hacksaw off the key start and left wires everywhere.
I put everything back togeather except for the front lights wire connector.   Its black, about 4 inches long has a red, white, blue, and a white with black stripe wire comming from it.
the Red wire is always hot, and the white w/blk stripe becomes hot when the key is turned over.
Does anyone know where this plugs in to?  I cant seem to find where, unless the guy cut the other set of wires that it used to go to.

Also, i plugged a flat 3 wire connection into another behind the fuse pannel, turned on the key and smoke.....   the 3 flat wire behind the box, all three wires are 12v hot. (glow plug connector?)

Just need the front lights and markers to work so I can take it through inspection.

 Thank you
-Ron

Oh, yeah,...
that's going to be a hard one to find if you don't know where it goes.
 Left of steering wheel,..
tucked up high in there. Above another curved? plug.

If that extended piece wasn't on there you'd probably have to pull the steering wheel to plug it in. Plug it in good or it can melt with partial contact.

ok, Still looking for the outlet/plug.

I have taken the drivers side air vent out, the bezel that covers the instrument cluster (for extra light.)

I removed the stearing wheel.

When you say left side.. thats the drivers side. not the Radio side.

I still cant find it

its kinda like a game of hot and cold

does it plug into the instrument cluster,
does it plug into another set of wires, or into a fixed or removeable terminal or switch?
Is it above the instrument pannel? In front of it?  Behind it?

I do have rear lights, blinkers, brake, and running lights. Just nothing going to the front. I popped out the headlight Toggle Switch, all is good.
The Small Red and the White w/blk stripe goes to this connector. I assume the Red, white and blue go to the front headlights.

Thank you
-Ron

Hello Everyone.

 THanks for the help.
I think I have realised that the part I am looking for to plug the switch into has been broken off from the blinker light switch.

Looks like I need a blinker light switch.
after I took the dash apart, I noticed a large peice missing just below the blinkerlight switch... Which also runs the hi beams.

 Thanks for the help.

Riight, it connects to the high beams.

Sounds like you are in the right area.
It plugs into the steering column.
Since you have the steering wheel off; Remove those 3 straight screws and the whole switch holder will come right off.

Correction

The blinker light switch does not go to the light switch plug
Its the windshield wiper switch. Its also cheaper.
