I don't know what to think. I know coolant (water) circulates through the cooling system because it would throw heat from the heater, but as soon as I would see the temp gauge quickly rise up the heater would start blowing cold. This is a puzzling one...

how hot is the heat coming from the heater??? i find that the infrared thermometer i bought really comes in handy for situations like this as you can measure head temp and hose temp and rad temp.  it doesn't give you an accurate temp, but a ballpark (the outside of the head/rad/hoses aren't as hot as the insides)

Heat output was hot, very hot. I think it split the heater core or something, it was puffing a little steam last time I used it.

uh not good!!!  coolant flows there all the time no matter of heater controls.  and breathing in that steam could potentially make you brain dead, or even kill you with enough concentration.  its best that you change it as soon as you can, but for now you can simply bypass it by connecting the two hoses at the firewall together.

it almost sounds like your rad fan isn't kicking on to cool the rad.

I had the rad fan wired directly to the battery. It didn't make any noticeable difference.

if the heater quits blowing, you are either losing coolant, or getting alot of air in your cooling system. will it overheat if you just let it sit there and idle?

Yup, it'll overheat if I let it idle.

it has to be a blown HG. if i let my car idle, no matter how hot it is, it will cool down in a matter of minutes. even from 240*f.. i bet if you pull your head off, theres either gonna be a bad gasket, or a cracked head. if its gotten very hot, its definitely gonna be cracked.
