bump, still just curious to know if anyone has an AC diesel with only a 1 speed fan setup? In other words, should the fan still work in an AC car if the radiator thermo switch is only a two pin instead of a three?
i know a friend with an '85 audi 4000 with a 1 speed fan with a/c (my brother currently owns it now). the a/c is inoperative, but unsure if the fan kicks on with it. the fan blows really fast and cools the rad fairly quickly with just one speed though...
i would assume that the a/c does kick on the fan, but using a resistor to limit the speed/nrg consumption.
if your fan doesn't come on when its at the a/c setting, then most likely you have a blown resistor. they are fairly big and are enclosed in a cylindrical ceramic tube.
Where is the resistor located and is this an inline resistor that can be replaced? Oddly enough the AC issue is the same one i was having on my 83. I would flip the switch to AC, the radiator fans would kick on, but the AC compressor would not get any juice. I am going to spend most of this coming friday working on it so any other ideas would be great. I am also going to get a new thermo switch for the radiator fan temp issue just to be sure because if the fans come on when the wires are jumped then the switch either is bad or not I did not let it get hot enough.
Edit: is the resistor part of the AC control panel?
the resistor should be located closest to the rad fan. if your fan runs with a/c on, then it should be okay, unless someone wired it direct.
okay ill follow the wiring from the rad fan to check for a split off to the AC unit.
@Possum79 yeah i am thinking it just will not kick on until it gets to just shy of the red so I will have to live with that. My fans should be kicking on like yours when i turn on the AC so i will just need to check for that resistor to see if that is my problem.
well thought i should update that the radiator fan issue is resolved. there was an air lock in the coolant and fluid was not getting to the thermo switch. Took the rabbit for its first 20mi and I now know i definitely need an exhaust put on! the TT DP makes me sound like im driving a Powerstroke with it being dumped underneath lol.
I still have to work out the issue of my AC not kicking on but ill make a separate post for that issue. thanks for the help here though.
I like that my little 1600cc's sounds like a semi truck!!!
your 1700 has 100ml more displacement!!! Sweet Jesus! what a beast!

Yeah i will admit it sounds great. I dont know if it is the bigger DP allowing it to but i can really hear my turbo spooling now! Now my performance rebuilt T3 and Giles Pump are really allowed to breath i guess because that puppy is spooling as soon as I start to take off. good times. As mentioned ill make a post with more updates when i get a couple more items taken care of.
