the sprocket is much more important to get because there is damage on the inside of the sprocket that prevents it from sitting flat against the crankshaft. Since it wobbles while spinning the back of the harominic balancer has been all scored up and the rubber ring is starting to creep out of its slot. Looking for the part around the GTA but will drive around ontario for the parts if need be, thanks.

The crank timing sprocket is only $30-40 new at frisco auto parts, make sure to get a new bolt as well.

The harmonic balancer is the same on the 96-99 TDI as well. You might have better luck finding a TDI in the wrecking yard.

This place has the VW Diesel serpentine belt style harmonic balancer available for only $65 (US)!  Check it out:

Note: also this part number is the "updated" style ('97 and onwards)

thanks for the link on the harmonic balancer and friscos didnt have the timing belt sprocket at any of their stores but it is only 60 dollars at the VW dealer with the new bolt so I think I will just get that. Is there any garages in the gta that specialize in vw diesel's? Once I get those 2 parts installed, I need to get my injection pump timed and my injectors tested/replaced and I cant do that myslef, I dont have to tools. Once all that is done then to car is almost perfect, just gotta fix that transmission whine.

Thanks

I bought a pulley at frisco in missisauga about 6 months ago, strange they don't stock it anymore. I must have got the last one...

That harmonic balancer is a bargain at twice the price though. Would be easily worth the 50 bucks in brokerage fees to have it shipped.
