Has anyone ever found actual turbo shaft end-play specs?
« on: March 17, 2009, 04:34:20 pm »
I'm about to tear down one turbo and sell the other... and I'll like to be a bit more scientific than the usual "very little shaft end-play" in the ad.

I've done a bunch of googling etc but have yet to find a source of what the stock and wear limits are for the Garretts and KKKs we run...  if anyone has a source I'd be very grateful!

Vince, i'm positive i've seen the info somewhere, because once when i was at VW we were trying to determine which turbo was good between 2 that were mixed up. In the end the difference was only 1mm or so ,but one was good and the other wasn't . I will dig through my literature in the next day or 2.
The info is out there somewhere.

I am not sure if there are different numbers for the VW versions, but most numbers I have seen for Garrett turbos on Volvos and others indicate maximum end play of .008" and max. radial play of .022".

I'll bet the guys at gpopshop.com would give you that info Vince.

I'm about to contact them about a k04 compressor for my car, just waiting for the 2 turbos I bought to show so I have the #'s they will ask for before I send the message.

Anyway Gerry has always been very helpful to me.
