temp gauge

I picked one up the other day for cheap my car's works but i dont know if i trust it it sometimes jumps all the way to high then back down but anyways where is a good place to put the temp reading thingy on? i tryed it on the one the cars gauge uses but it puts this one all the way to full pics would be awesome! thanks dan
