Adjusting wastegate - AAZ
« on: March 16, 2009, 04:08:01 am »
Can someone tell me which way the nuts need to go to up the boost please?
Do i wind them to the end of the bar so in theory they are almost coming off the end of the rod or is it the other way round?

And is it a useless mod without changing the boost pin and winding that round?

I'm running the joke LDA by the way and i've just got my boost gauge ready to fit so what kind of PSI should i expect.

Please steam clean your engine.  :( That looks like your valve cover has been leaking for a loooong time, and It's a 5 minute fix. :)

Here's the picture with the wastegate adjustment visible:

In actual fact you will likely find that it's not of much use... its range is pretty limited.

For more control an actual boost controller is probably more effective... if you Search you'll find tons of info on that particular topic.

less boost |--------\\---| more boost

if your going to adjust that thing to above 15 psi,  you'll need an intercooler. above 15 psi your turbo will blow in hot air

whats that shinny metal pipe going from the top back of the intake manifold going down near the tranny following the oil supply line for the turbo? kinda looks like a blow off valve. if it is i wonder what sets it off. kinda looks vaccum activated attached to the wastegate .

EGR system, turned on and off by the Engine Control Module via vacuum.

On some of the  "extreme" ECO AAZ engines the turbo is also often turned on and off by the ECM as well.  Hard to tell from these pictures exactly, but it looks to me like there's a Y-connection on the vacuum hose to the EGR that goes to the turbo's wastegate.

Thanks for the info guys, got my boost gauge installed and it's pushing a max of about 0.4 bar which i think is about right for stock boost.
Going to have a play with the wastegate tonight.
Aiming for about 15psi as my gauge only goes that far anyway, will be getting a stock IC soon and i've already blocked the EGR pipe and upped the max fuel screw

.4 bar is only 6 psi.  Stock boost should be closer to 9-10.

Any ideas what to check?

Also:

- Exhaust manifold leak
- Intake manifold leak
- leak in tubing between turbo and intake manifold

I believe that this car is from the UK, so the brake booster is on the firewall on the drivers side of the car(behind the motor) you can see it in the corner of some of the pics of the back of the motor.
