Author Topic: Cold Start--Miss at idle (Read 4395 times)

Hey guys,

I am having a little issue with my 91 Jetta TD (ecodiesel). I had a water pump changed a few days ago and when doing that they reset the engine timing along with adjusting the IP for a little better performance. I have no idea if they advanced the timing or even how much. Since then, on cold starts, as soon as the car fires up, it misses at idle until I rev the car quickly. Then it operates normally. Did the guys who worked on the car screw something up when the adjusted the pump? Would that adjustment cause my miss at idle?

Any ideas?

Any ideas before I could possibly look like a complete moron bringing it back to the shop?

I woul bet that it is off a bit, but I would ask them how they set it and what value is it now .095 or 1.05mm? or somewhere in between. If they advanced it it should start better.

He said he set it to the .95. And also said I should be using the cold start handle for all starts. He said all the pumps he sets up are all that way and the engine likes it better. Also he said all diesels set up that way will miss at idle if the cold start handle is not pulled.

I almost never use the cold start knob unless it is below freezing, and then I pull it after the engine starts. Mine just works better that way. My pump timing is at .93. My car doesn't miss when it starts. It may run a little rough because of the oil being thick and such, but that's it. On a side note, when I rebuilt my injectors the engine would miss for the first two cold starts. The first start was to warm it up for the head bolt retorque (did a headgasket at the same time). The second was to go for a good romp. After that, the injectors seated in and she starts smooth again now. Did you replace your injectors?

No never changed the injectors at all.
