85 1.6 td cracked pre-chamber help
« on: March 14, 2009, 04:31:00 pm »
All 4 of the pre-chambers on my rebuilt 85 1.6 td, (mechanical) head are cracked.  Most of the cracks lead from the large opening outward toward the edges.  No crack goes all the way to the outside, but are there none-the-less.  Are the pre-chambers replaceable, how expesive is it to replace them (who sells them), and/or do you know a dependable and reasonable builder who would do the work?  OR, would it just be cheeper to bite the bullet, get another head and add the new valves; reground cam to it?
The builder stated that it would work ok for now if they don't get too hot, with long boost sessions.
After thinking about this, and doing a little research, (It sucks not knowing what you're doing), I am thinking since I am doing a complete rebuild I should deal with this now so I don't end up beating up a new engine.  How likely are the pre-chambers to break and come apart?  Do I need to baby the motor if I go ahead with the current head?  I plan to pull a trailer from time to time and will be climing some hills.
Needs some wise counsel.

Hey subsonic, too bad you live on the other side of the US.  I am parting out an 85 GTI golf.  If you need something let me know, I may have it, and will sell it very reasonable.
Thanks for the thoughts also.

Thanks for the tips.
I am parting it out mostly for the rear disc assemblies which I want to put on my 80 caddy pu, along with the steering wheel, gauges, and the 5spd. transmission.  The body is pretty straight except for the front clip, which is bent some, but could be repaired easily.  The car also has extnsive mold throughout the interior.  I am highly allergic to this, so the interior is junk to me.  The engine runs ok and the fuel dilivery system seems to work ok.  I have a couple pictures on the Yakima Craigslist.

I agree with you, but it seems the things I am looking for are on the EAST coast and Canada!!!!

 Thanks
