if you wanna see efficient carb, check this out.  not sure if he used a conventional carb or a modified one though... but very cool! 150 hp on a 2 cyl motor FTW!

lol keep it rollin   the FI was just plain mechanical AFAIK.  sounds like you might need to mess with timing, and mixture a little bit.  i tried running rich and it was wayyy more powerful, but the spark plugs got fouled up pretty quick.

polish mechanics are famous for one thing.  doing things on the cheap.  this guy doesn't cost a lot.  hes super cool and very honest.  but man is he cheap   knows ALL the tricks for the older VW/Audi's

i'm trying to recall... its near the throttle plate area.  he inserts this long allen type tool and turns it to adjust the mixture.  VERY cool!  unfortunately thats about all i know... i've just watched him do it.  i bet the 'tex would have some info on this.  he has a really good ear... he times engines by ear, and i swear they run VERY well using this technique, but it takes more time than with a dial gauge.

Right now I am driving an 83 GTI and it is really fast. The guy I bought it off of has a yellow GTI that does 12.29 in the 1/4 mile. Yes. He took my TD exhaust mani and a crossflow head runs 20 ish boost welded spider gears and solid steel instead of coil overs in the rear when he is on the strip. That car is stupid fast...all original CIS. I got his leftover parts on the car I drive and it is fast. I usually get about 30-32 MPG as well. I just can't wait for my TD jetta to get going though

I'm converting to the Slow Stove soon and i will have less then 50hp lol but phenomenal ECONOMY! well if i gettin 425 to a 40l tank then im oly gettin 10.6 l/100km and that translates to about 22mpg :(:(:(:( crap mileage and crap performance lol, what is wrong with the world :P

Is your 1.7 CIS, CIS-Lamdba, or CIS-E?

If it's CIS, you adjust the mixture by turning a small screw hidden in the metering plate housing. I'll take a picture if you need one. If the mixture has never been adjusted you'll have to drill and tap out the steel plug over the screw.

CIS-Lambda and crappy economy could be the frequency valve or the oxygen sensor, more likely the latter.

CIS-E, it's probably your oxygen sensor. Replace, then adjust the mixture to get the correct DPR current.

I just bought a 2400 pound Quantum Coupe with a 1.6L gas engine. Standard CIS, but she'll do 35mpg (~6.5L/100km) combined cycle. Fast enough for me, considering my standard of comparison is a bus. :D

well i don't have a O2 sensor so i am guessing CIS.. lol

I doubt its ever been adjusted.. but i think the problem is more likely just this vaccum leak, probably could use a tune-up.. and timing is more than likely off.

Pictures would be nice if you have them! :)

Well I will be most likely keeping the 1.7 in the garage for the day i get another Mk1 :) OR MAYBE i will use it to make my go kart out of!! Lmao holy hell man, what do they have like 90 ft.lbs? that with the 4K trans and only a 6-800 lb go-kart!! YOU WOULD BE A FRIGIN ROCKET!! LOL

So I will probably replace all that good stuff when it comes time :) BUT FOR NOW I will be going to reliable simplistic diesel :)

oh HELLLLLLLLL YEAH.. I dunno, personally it looks to me that the mustang is out handling that charger like a MAN. lol

Steve McQueen is a wayy better driver imho :P The charger flops around a lot on those roads, and the mustang keeps it pretty level. Did you notice the charger nose dive ever jump? lol heavy ass thing engine alone weighs 3 ton :P
