1992 Jetta Coupe NA Diesel
« on: March 13, 2009, 09:38:29 am »
My apologies for a possibly well-covered topic on this forum. I'm a newbie to the vw diesel seen, but I'm looking to purchase one and found the topic vehicle locally available for $1795 with 259k on the odometer and 2 owners (incl. current). Now, I'm trying to educate myself and research the car a bit and I'm having alot of trouble finding out exactly what motor (code) is in this vehicle and the specs for the motor. The owner says its the original motor and not a transplant. Can anyone point me to a source or shed some light on the the exact NA diesel motor VW put in this year of Jetta in coupe trim? And also what trim level this Jetta may be...Carat, Wolfsburgh, GL? I would rather get the info from the forum instead of have the owner educate me (or mislead me). Can anyone help? Hit me with any questions or concerns to be considering in the purchase too.

you'd probably need the VIN to be specific, but i think this link is what you need

this link (also taken from the above link) will give you the engine codes for the different years.  the engine should be an ME with a AWY or 4S transmission.

you should really examine the car before paying that much too.  inspect the injection pump well as the old ones have a tendancy to leak from using the new ULSD (because they were exposed to the old fuel)

Great, informative links! TY for the info. Im looking at it tomorrow and I am a bit weary about the number of miles. I'll be asking about the preventive maintenance and definitely looking for leakage, especially around the pump then.

if the timing belt was never changed, either walk away, or ask for a big decrease in price... ask to see the bill as proof unless hes a mechanic.
