kinda more of a feeler to see if theres such a thing as 1mm os pistons for a 1.5 engine. i need some so i can start building my 1.5TD with oil squirters. the pistons dont have to be notched. cause they never came that way for a 1.5. lemme know what ya got or know of?

Welcome to the club.  Thats why I'm looking at 1.6TD pistons on 1.5 rods.  Oversized 1.5 pistons are currently being cast from unobtainium.

There may be some NOS floating around out there.  There was a set on the Samba that someone got to befor me.

Good luck

thanks for the heads up. if i find some, i will let you know where i find them. ive already got a set of 76.98 pistons in good shape, but i need to go to 77.48mm bore. my turbo block is already at 76.98 and its pretty well worn out.

That'd be me. They were standard size, however; is that what you need?

Nope.  I'm planning on useing a TD block, so i have to bore at least to the first oversize.  Glad I didn't get them.

They were advertised as 1MM oversize.  Did you buy them because they were suposed to be oversized?

Jeez, I wonder if oversized pistons ever existed for the 1.5.

seems like using sleeves or modifying 1.6 pistons is the only option for those old blocks...

seems like sleeves are the way to go. anyone use prothe's sleeves? i really dont want to go the extra mile to do a job right and then find out that the sleeves were of ***ty quality. that would tend to upset someone

I'm going to be looking through a whole stack of Bentlies this weekend to see if there is a rod in some other VAG engine that will work with a 1.5 crank, and 1.6TD pistons in a 1.6TD block.

From a few cursory measurements, it looks like the shorter stroke of the 1.5 crank is made up in about 1/2 in the wrist pin height, and 1/2 in the rod length.  I'd like to have it all in rod length and be able to use the 1.6TD pistons.

that would be really freakin sweet. i dont even know how long the stock 1.5 rods are in mm size. i wonder of some sort of gas rod might work? like a 1.7 rod or a G60 or something? it would be sweet to have a 1.5 TD motor.

I got this info from a friend of mine who's moved quite a number of various VW engines through his shop.

Quote
As for rods, ALL less-than-1.8L engines (and less-than-2.2L I5s) have 136mm rods. All 1.8L engines except the G60 have 144mm rods; G60 has 136. Audi 3A has 144. VW ABA and AEG have 159. All 2.2L I5s have 144mm, except for 10V turbo engines, all of which have 136mm. The Eurovan 10V is an oddball with a different rod that has an enormous wrist pin.

So that gives you rod lengths, at least, for the gasser engines.

Also, 1.7L and smaller displacement engines have rods with smaller big end bearing journal than the diesels did. The bigger engines' rods (144mm rods) are apparently compatibly sized with the diesels'.

im still not sure how long the 1.5 rods are. they are not the same as 1.6 rods or anything else for that matter.

I used 1.7 rod bearings;

so a 1.7 has the same size bore as an AAZ correct? and what stroke does it have? its got the same length stroke as a 1.5 doesnt it?

Hopefully all rod dimensions are in the various Bently manuals.  I'll have access to about 50 different Bentlies for VW and Audis this week end.
