AAZ wiring and sender Q's
« on: March 11, 2009, 12:50:50 pm »
Hi,

I'm just in the process of wiring up my engine conversion, it's an AAZ into a 72 camper van, just got a few q's I was hoping someone could assist with.

Would some one be able to tell me what these two senders do, there's the one pictured and another further down behind the blue clip. Am I right in thinking the one shown is the coolant temp sender- what does the other one do? there's 4 wires running to it. I didn't think it was the fan switch as that was on the rad?

What are these wires to the pump do? In the haynes theres only reference to the fuel cut off - which I'm assuming is the one at the bottom. There's another 3 - with two of them having 2 wires running to them. How should I wire up these on the pump? is it simply to point 2 on the ignition with an earth where there's two wires?

2 wires running to this one, it's at the bottom on the side of the pump.

Looking at your pump I'm going to assume you are somewhere in Europe?

Those 2 wires at the bottom of the pump control the advance. It's similar to the TDI. We don't get them over here so I have no idea what controls them, or how you should hook them up.

The sensor in the center of the 4 injection lines has something to do with start of injection. Again, we didn't get them over here.

And yes, the one on top of the rusty piece of steel that the 4 injection lines screw into is the stop solenoid.

Unfortunately I don't think it's going to be as simple as just hooking everything up to 12v.

Your first picture probably is a temp sensor, but it's different then all the AAZ ones I have ever seen.

Yes the senders in the first pic are the temp senders.
What I did when I installed my AAZ was to use the old flange that the senders fit into from the 1.6na that iI replaced. If you can get one of them iit will bolt directly to the engine and then you can use the old senders that have just one slip on wire instead of the plugs.
May be the 1.6TD used this part also?
As for the rest of your questions I don't know.

Thanks for your help,

It is indeed a U.K engine - I had no idea they would be quite so different! I'll try and get my hands on some decent wiring diagrams and work it all out.

Stop solenoid should be o.k - it'll be fused and run in conjunction with the glow plug relay I'm using.

I'll also have a go at testing the two temp senders/switches in some boiling water tomorrow. I've got a feeling the 4 pin temp sensor near the block is for a fan, and the other one pictured is for the gauge.

Cheers!

Tom

Hopefully someone has some solid info on these pumps. I've always wondered what controls them.

If need be, you could just swap out that pump for a regular AAZ pump

Cheers, guess i could keep on the look out for another one, aaz stuff isn't that common over here though. it's all non tubro's and then tdi's. the pump looks very similar to the bosch unit used on a ford enigne i've got, so i could look at that.

the engine came from a '97 car, tdi's had already been out for a few years at that point so i think this was the very last of the aaz's. probably explains the funny pump.

thanks for your help.

Just tested these on a dummy circuit with a heat gun, the one pictured below is a fan switch, whilst the one nearer the head behind the blue clip is the sender for the temp gauge.
