TD trans ID ??
« on: March 08, 2009, 08:28:57 pm »
Can anyone ID this trans for me? It was a consolation purchase for driving 600 km north into Ontario to purchase an 83' TD rabbit that did not exist...

Here is no "FF" or "020" markings that I can see. I was going to rebuilt this trans and powder coat the case for my Caravan TD conversion :-)

Here it is right side up.... you can see the speedo cable -cut- so it should be 87' or later - right ??

its a rabbit manual trans I think :-D

I'd bet that it's a 4S. The 4S is 5th from the top. :D

Yes ? Where to you see the 4S ? I thought the ID was always on the bottom of the bellhousing :-)

NOW I see it... those 16 hours of driving has affected my eyes ;-)

when did you drive 600km's for a rabbit that didn't exist?  that totally sucks!

btw the spreadsheet i'm looking at is showing 2H, 4K, 7A, & FK as being from '83 rabbits.  if indeed that is the vehicle this transmission came from... and maybe there are a few more combinations of transmissions that i haven't listed...

for your sake, i hope its the 7A as it has the 0.71 5th  8) 2700 rpm @ 65mph, or even lower if you upsize the wheels

BUT, what i can deduce from the photo, is that it is a 4S transmission (listed for '87 & '88 jetta's)

yes that one is a 4S and it wasn't last mounted in a MK1. It still has the MK2 gearbox rear mount

The R&P is pretty close to that of a mkI but not right on so you're speedometer/odometer will be off just a little.  The gear spread on this box is nice with the tallest 4th gear you can get on a mkII.  The 3.94 diesel R&P is the only bummer, really.  I have a 4s in my Rabbit 1.9TD and it is really nice for all the hill climbing I do in my commute- I remain in top gear climbing crazy hills but on the highway the engine is at about 2825RPM at 65mph w/ nominal tires.

The taller mkII gasser R&P combined with the mkII .75 top gear gives the same reduction as the .71 top in a mkI box w/ 3.89R&P if you follow.
