Audi 80 1Z TDI
« on: March 05, 2009, 02:57:44 pm »
This is my first venture into the TDI section, so be gentle!!!
Ive been after an 1Z engine, or block and head for an mTDI project after a bit of PM exchange with oldschoolrich; I have an AAZ in the caddy and will tune it up within the stress limits of the AAZ (1.6GTD pump and upgrade from K03 to K14 etc), but I am after more bhp than 150bhp and so am considering the mTDI route... as is usual here in Ireland, sensibly priced td/tdi 'base' engines are hard to source, but I know of a 93 Audi 80 TDI which I think is 1Z engine code; is this suitable for the usual mTDi treatement??? Ive been told that even though they share the same engine code,  they are 'very different' from the vw mk3 TDi 1Z...
I cant see how apart from the north/south (Audi) vs east/west arrangement of the Mk3; surely they are the same engine???
There is one at a salvage yard, where I am 'a regular'; its missing bits from its pump, but that'd be a good bargaining point, and I wouldnt need any of it anyhow for the mTDI approach...
The engine might either find its way into my 86 Passat or possibly the caddy...

Vagcat lists that 1993 audi 80's did indeed have the 1Z tdi so it should be it. So get that mTDI pump and start having fun wearing out tires and clutches !

Cheers caveman, its more that they are 'expensive' to source than 'rare...
I plan to swop a complete car (nissan thing) that I can blag from a mate for the engine; just didnt want to go to all the hassle if its no use...

80 tdi the turbo sits high on a difrant manafold , compared to the mk3 golf tdi the starter is on the other side and the flywheel may be difrant to, but a aaz flywheel will fit , the 80s were 1z up to 96 97

ciao,se you don't pretend so much power from your 1z covering pomp tdi of fiat it chromes tdi 1.9
I in my mk1 have motor 1z of audi tdi and with pomp of fiat it chromes I already have 90 cvs to 70 km\hs I have not been able to try better on roll because I don't have revolution counter yet but I can assure you that couple and resumption are also monstrous in 4° march from 50 km\hs you see post it modifies mk1
bye bye
