head gasket replacement
« on: March 05, 2009, 02:45:15 pm »
im starting to change the headgasket in my 91 td, i do not have a manual yet but i started to tear down anyways. It seems fairly straight foreward but i am now stuck. |I cant figure out how to take off the timing belt cover backing plate.. everything is ready to come off but this is causing a hang up. i have removed a few bolts where i thought it would allow me to remove it but no go. This and the exhaust clamps are holding it on.. any help would be appreciated.

The top half of the timing belt cover backing plate
has a little hidden bolt (maybe a 10-11mm)
that is inside the belt, towards the front of the motor.
If you look at the back (motor side) of the backing plate, you will see a little bump where there is an indent for the bolt.

Good luck!
