I'm wanting to install a CD player in my 92 Passat. Any suggestions as to how to deal with the "powered" speakers? I think this is called the Aktiv system.

I dont think any aftermarket CD can deal with them...
The speakers run really odd impedance, and a regular CD player should blow them up instantly.

I believe that you need a deck and 4 speaks.
(they are overpriced, but Crutchfield is good about providing mounting kits, if a deck can be installed trouble-free, they should have the kit to do it.

I have never delt with the aktiv system, but used to install stuff years ago. If you don't mind you could find out the impedance and add a compasitor/resistor to add ohms to them and wire them paralell to cut the ohm rating to help...also if they are powered themselves maybe all you would need to do is get a RCA to speaker output and then all that would transfer is signal with no power at all. Just a thought.

Deck and 4 speakers is the only way to go... ( I was in Mobile Audio for 6 years  )and you have to send a new set of wires to each speaker.  problem with the aktiv system is the speakers are run thru a separate amp that only the OEM deck can hook up to due to a strange floating ground.

Best buy or future shop in your area will have good mounting hardware

IMO tho you may be better served trying to find a OEM CD changer ( your deck should support it )
