Diesel Pinging?

ok, the best way to describe what my engine does, is to say that it pings. but its only at pretty high rpms and only between shifts or if you are going over 65 at part throttle with almost no load on the engine. its got stock N/A pump and infectors and lots of boost. im 100% positive my timing is off some. i just time all my engines by ear. but what can i do to get rid of the annoying ping? it sounds as the timing advances a ton after every shift. i figure its gotta be something to do with the pump or injectors, cause those are the 2 things i understand the least, and my engine only has about 1k miles on the bottom end.

i have no idea. the bodies are still super clean. its done it with both sets of injectors. (both stock 1.5 infectors) i also have a set of turbo injectors. i was wondering if swapping those in might fix my problem? they were rebuilt and balanced about 10k miles ago the PO told me.

Have you done any mods to the pump? Like the GOV.mod or adjusted   the fuel screw.

yea, the fuel pin is all the way in and then some.. i took the collar off so i can thread it in way farther. i didnt turn it in much past what the collar allowed. i also backed the max speed limiter screw way out. and i set the  idle pretty low too. but besides that the pump is stock. no gov mods (yet). and i plan on putting my lda top on this pump and removing the fuel limiter pin.

I'm not an expert on pumps, but maybe your pump, the way you've adjusted it, is giving it the extra amount of fuel off boost and posably even tip in throttling?
I kind of had the same issue's before I changed out the NA pump for the TD pump.
Just a thought.

Side note: Where in Oregon are you located?

lol, your in portland? im about 75 miles west. i live in astoria. and it probably is the pump. its an old unit with an unknown history, and come to think of it, its only did it since i had this pump on there. i have a turbo pump i franken-ized because the input shaft bushings were wiped out. basically i took EVERYTHING (besides the lift pump and governor gears) out and put all the TD pump guts in it. but when i put it on, it ran like a champ, but i didnt have any throttle. not even a little bit. it was just constant idle. and i wanted it to run, so instead of dissecting the pump i built, i just grabbed that pump and threw her on there, cause i knew that pump ran, and i wanted to drive my damn car. i was having boost withdrawls. :(

Set your pump timing properly and go from there.

I see. Well, you can try to retard the timing a tad and see if it helps. It sounds like it is advanced too much.

It might, but my guess is that it is too far advanced to begin with. Try retarding the timing a bit and see what happens.

Ok, just make sure you can go back to where it was before you adjust it. You really gotta save for the adapter and dial gauge, it'll save you lots of agony.
