TDI parts on IDI engine
« on: August 15, 2005, 05:46:42 am »
I'm rebuilding a solid lifter 1.6TD engine for a project car and will be moderately "strengthening" it with higher boost, fuel, and intercooling. I would like to use the metal 1.9L head gasket, can that be used on a solid lifter engine? What about the new windage tray style oil pan gasket?

The windage tray oil pan gasket from an 1.9TD will bolt right into any earlier watercooled 4-cylinder motor.

TDI head gaskets aren't suitable for IDIs due to the IDI pre-chambers needing the head gasket to seal around them.

The metal 1.9l IDI head gasket will drop right in and work on a hydraulic lifter 1.6lTD, but not on a solid lifter motor.  This is because the hydraulic motors (both 1.6 and 1.9) have an extra oil return passage where on the solid lifter motor there is a coolant passage, and the hole in the head gasket for each is in a different position.  If you just bolted a hydrualic lifter head gasket onto your solid lifter motor, then as soon as you filled the head up with coolant it would run out at the front of the motor where the extra oil return "bulge" is on the hydraulic lifter motor.

If you could plug the extra oil return hole somehow, the hydraulic head gasket will work.  The plug would have to hold the coolant back against cooling system pressure.  I tried plugging it by cutting an aluminum disc and siliconing it into place when installing the head gasket.  It sealed when the engine was hot, but I found it weeped a tiny bit of coolant when the engine was cold.  This may be because as the engine heated and cooled, the "springy" multi-layer steel head gasket could conform to the change in thickness, where the the siliconed aluminum disc-plug could not.
