Clutch pedal movement
« on: August 12, 2005, 09:35:44 am »
Last night I was leaving the city and upon releasing the cluch I heard a little crunch and then I lost almost 2/3 of the peddal movement.   I fiddled around when I got home.  Took out a liitle bit of play but still nothing then after pressing the peddal repetitively the cruch was heard again and I had full peddal.  I pressed it a few more times to ensure all was good and it happened again.  I tried to fit my frame under the dash to see if there was anything obstructing the peddal becasue the noise seemed to come from around the fire wall (acording to my girlfriend) but I couldn't find anything that looked wrong.  This is my first VW so I'm learning as I go.  Has anyone experienced this or better yet, found a fix?

What year/model car do you have?  If it's over an 85-ish or so, it probably has a self-adjusting clutch cable, which were failure prone, and make a little "crunch" sound when they "self adjust" but it also sounds like that when the adjustment mechanism fails to... er... "adjust".  Save yourself some grief (and money) and replace it with a manual adjust cable, they feel a lot better too and you'll never have to worry about it not working, and adjustment takes about 30 seconds.  :P

Of course, if you dont have a self-adjusting cable, then all of this is moot....  :P

By the way, Germanautoparts has the cable for about 15 bucks.  :)  I bought one for my Rocco and it works like a champ.

I have a '91 1.6L NA with a manual adjust, I think,(Spiner at the bottom to tighten or loosen slack) clutch cable.  I just took it out for a quick errand and the pedal went all the way to the floor for 3-4 shifts and now it's stuck again.  Do you think the cable could be finished?

This moring I fueled  up.  When I got in the car I noticed a spring and a plastic piece laying on the floor.  I think it's from the pedal for the clutch although the clutch works fine now.  I just don't fit between the seat and the steering wheel very well(at all) :P  If I have time Sun or Mon I'll yank the seat and get a better look.
