what manifolds will fit a 1.6 n/a diesel?
« on: February 25, 2009, 03:27:30 am »
i'm looking at doing a 1.6 n/a diesel to TD upgrade some time in the semi-near future and am wondering what manifolds are compatible? and how does a gasser manifold compare to a diesel manifold in a TD application?

As far as bolting up, any 8v VW manifold will bolt to the 1.6 head. There is ostensibly some benefit to running a gasser manifold on a turbodiesel, as it decreases the air bias across the cylinders that's inherent in the stock 1.6TD intake design.

16v+ manifolds won't bolt up, as their port spacing is different.

Any manifold from an 8V non-crossflow will work. Intake manifolds from 8V cross flows like the ABA or AEG will not work as they are to the front of the head like the 16V.

in order to run the intake manifolds on the TD's dontcha hafata flip the turbo and manifold down so there's enough clearance?

I'd heard that somewhere too, haven't managed to sort it out yet.  Anyone?

yes you do, I am using a stock gasser mani, and the turbo needs to be flipped and then clocked so the oil feed and drain point in the right direction.

ive got a gasser mani on my car. works wonders. best torque gain from any one single mod.. and ive got a VNT 17 off an 01 ALH engine. it makes scary amounts of boost really quick. it starts making boost under 1500rpms. i had to do some modifying to one of the mounting bosses on the bottom of the intake tho, but you might be able to get around that with an mk1 gas mani. im not sure if they have that mount or not. and i just fabbed up my own custom adaptor to go where the throttle body would be. best part is, if my turbo ever goes tits up, and doesnt take the engine with it, take the air cleaner off the turbo intake and clamp it on the intake mani adaptor to limp home.
