Hi all, new to this , just finished totally rebuilding 88 td jetta everything is great except even if i double clutch it grinds into second up shift and down shift too i didchange the fluid too so im not sure other than syncros maybe thanks. :?
That's pretty common on old VW 020 transmissions. It's especially noticeable when it's cold outside (below about 5-10 C). You can try GM's Syncromesh fluid in the transmission to try to smooth it out, but if you are getting grinding at both upshift AND downshift, I'd say your sychronizer for 2nd gear is pretty bad. Usually, you'll only get grinding on the upshift, and only when the car is cold. Once it warms up, the grinding should go away. If not, you may have to tear into/replace your trans.

Ahh ok its winter here still, perhaps i,ll try the fluid too and see what happens thanks..the tranny was the one unknown on this car so..

In the meantime, try pausing a second or two before shifting into second. I find that can usually eliminate the grind altogether. Just a quick two count, then shift. You'll probably have to run it up a bit more in 1st to get enough momentum for the 1-2 sec pause.

i've had the same troubles with my old transmission. changing the gear oil helped immensely! but it still did the grind if i shifted too fast. there is a sweet spot though... where you can put the gear lever to 2nd but not fully (maybe half way or less? its just before the gear will grind), and hold it there for a split second longer, and then throw it into gear and it won't grind. it took me a little while to get used to, but i managed to get it bang on for a few launches. of course the odd time i would still grind it...
Use GM synchromesh (without the friction modifiers) tranny fuild. Makes the tranny shift smooth as butter. And completelty eliminated my 2nd gear grind in mt 91 (360xxxkm's)
