Jet engine from a Turbo!

Well not that i need another project. But i was messing with my collection of old turbos off various things. and thought it would be neat to build a jet engine with one of them. Has anyone done this? I've found a few sites about it but they are rather confusing. Does anyone have basic and simple plans?
Feel free to post some pics if you have some.

Not sure about that, but i'm pretty sure you can make a small scale gas turbine from the old gas heaters that were in beetles, things, etc. They were designed to produce heat instead of thrust, but if you look at how they are made, esp looking one from the end they are the same thing. Probably leftover plans of V2's left on the floor at the wolfsburg plant after the war.

Well i guess thats what i mean. I'm not gonna try to propell anything just wanna make noise.

If you remember the show "junkyard wars" they had a team do this once. They used a really big truck turbo and actually propelled a junk-built "cart" down a drag strip. They used propane I think to fire it. Even more interesting was the "pulse-jet" engine the other team built. That's some crazy stuff there, with like, zero moving parts.

Dig around online searching for "valveless pulse jet" and you should find a guy that built one and ran his go-cart with it.
One bent piece of pipe, with a propane line running into it. The size and shape of the bends is fairly important.
I've seen a jet engine powered go-cart using a truck turbo for it's basis, running around a college parking lot. They used another turbo as the power turbine, to run a drive shaft out to the gear reducer, then on to the axle. Loud, impressive, and hard to keep running for any length of time, due to heat and bearings issues.
The turbo based units are not a weekend project, so much, but the valveless pulse jets.... maybe.

Check out Survival Research Labs. they have been making INSANE "art " machines since the eighties. They made a pulse engine and brought it on tour in europe. It set off the air raid sirens in Austria. They have a couple of hovercraft which are moved by a couple of pulse engine. THE SOUND IS UNBELIEVABLE ! also check out the 2x4 launcher.

Valveless pulse jets are awesome. LOTS of noise and LOTS of heat!

One of the problems in building a turbine engine is to reduce the speed of the airflow before the combustion chamber canīt remember the exact figures though, but that is just to get it running... the biggest issue will be the temperature.... an example the start cycle of a rolls royce dart turboprop engine the temperature rises to about 850-900 degrees (centigrade) and then cools down to about 400-500 (temp in this case is meassured between two turbine stages...
But for a limited amount of time you can make thrust with a homebuilt turbine engine before it melts down....

Ah crap. Now you've showed me something that caught my interest, and now I've got the itch to build it. Hmmm... I wonder if my dad would miss the turbo off of his Cummins?
Definitely interesting though. Oh, and I loved to watch Junkyard Wars. Wondered what happened to it... Question

i seem to recall one of the last episodes one of the challenges was to build an airplane that could fly. one team (brits) built a plane so good that the guy flying got some serious altitude..(for a plane built with junk) enough to kill himself and he had NO parachute or any safety device or gauges. i think they might have broken a few laws, but i could be wrong. that show was kick ass!!!

Agreed. Junkyard Wars kicked ass. I still have a bunch of episodes on VHS somewhere. I still miss the show.
