ok so i changed the balljoints and tie rods shortly after a "rattle" occoured in the front end and clicking time to time i know its not axels everything else seems tight...but the rattle goes away when i apply brakes....wheel bearings?
i just can't figure it out because everything in the front end is tight anyone have this problem before?
Is it MK1, MKII? Sometimes the backing plates on the spindles get a little loose causing a rattle. Hope this helps!
On mk2's and some early mk3's the brake pads wear out the 2 arms that they sit on and come out to locate the caliper . Over time the pads bouncing up and down cause them to make grooves in the arms. There are a couple of things you can try. If you have some kind of welder- i used to just use an oxygen acetylene and brass rod, you can build up the sections that are worn and then grind it all square or get an extra pair of the brake pad clips, cut the tongue that sticks up and then place it under both pads. MAKE SURE THEY ARE NOT TOO TIGHT. With the pads on but without the caliper attached, you should be able to move the pads sideways. Get some anti-seize or brake grease and lube up where the pads are touching .
i don't even have the brake pad clips....mabe that is the problem?
That will do it !! The fact that it goes away when you hit the brakes is the smoking gun.
anyone know where i can buy the brake pad clips?
got some new clips installed them...FIXED the problem Thanks guys for all your help!
