I have an AAZ head on a 1.6td MF with an old T3 probably in need of a rebuild.

Have a really really bad oil leak shortly since head replacement. It is definately not leaking from the cam cover or the oil line to and from the oil filter and turbo. It could be coming from the oil pan but i have a brand new gasket in there... and i got all the bolts tight (but 1) but it isleaking a LOT. While running; about a drip a every 4-5 seconds? from under the car it looks like its coming from the rear side of everything as i can't see anything from the front.

I'm starting to think the intermediate shaft JUST PURELY because i chose NOT to replace the seal when i had the chance. Murphy's law at it's best.

anyone know any common places oil can leak seemingly unnoticed at this volume?

It does not leak while it's not running but obviouslly it will drip for a few minutes afterwards because the oil pan is covered in oil. I'll take the timing belt cover off and brace my self for the results.... but i uncliped it and pulled it away and couldn't see anything coming from the cam.

anyone ever had an oil leak that appeared after a rebuild but then went away after a while?

I had a couple of VW heads [don't remember gas or diesel] that leaked at the machine hole plug behind the cam gear. Don't remember if there is more than one ? I will go out into the garage later to have a look see on a head i got sitting there.
You should be able to determine whether it's from the back of the block or at the belt end. Real pain when everything's dirty huh? Also remember the intermediate shaft bearing has 2 seals. i learned my lesson also about cleaning the surface behind it. Rust builds up and keeps it from seating 100%.

My head is brand new so it should be easy to see the oil. But the oil is still clear (almost) so it's hard to see sometimes.

Is changing the IM shaft seals a big job?

not really, luckily you can remove the seal carrier and do it on a bench.

the issue is that you need to pull the IM pulley and re-time the motor when you are done(because you have to drop the timing belt)

What do you mean by seal carrier?

Timing isn't an issue anymore. I've done it so many times all i need is someone to watch the fly wheel for me to get TDC.

the IM seal is held in a carrier that bolts to the block with a gasket behind it.

to replace the seal you need to remove the pulley and take out the two bolts that hold the carrier to the block.

then you can remove/replace the seal on a bench(I did this with a bench vice to holt the carrier and a big socket the right diameter to push out the seal and in the new one)

a few taps with a hammer/seal driver(or big socket) and the seal carrier can be bolted back on the block with new gasket.

re install pulley and re time motor

Don't forget the o ring that goes around the carrier also. But yes you have to remove the t belt. I loosen the big bolt[nut?] for the gear by holding it with a prybar against one of the bolts. It's a bit awkward and i find you have more leverage from underneath.

Where would one find said replacement seals?
I asked a parts shop back when i was looking for bearings and they wanted something like $60cad for just the IM seal.

the seal itself is actually the same as the cam and small and of crank one too.

yep, I bought all the seals at once and had them shipped to my parents house this summer(where the car was) and when I wen to rebuild the motor I freaked out for a minute because I couldn't figure out which was which, until I looked at the numbers and realized they were the same.

thats vw for you, always finding ways to re use parts to cut on parts costs.

well the shipping would be ten times the cost of the parts

I'll make sure that i need those seals and then see.

it would be $42.9787 CAD for those two seals that are like 2$ each...

I think i'll save my pennies and make a large order from importpartscanada coz they'll pay shipping over 50$ or what ever it is. and it's not international or anything.
Thanks for the help though. I know what im looking for now and how to do it.
I need wheel bearings, a cv and boot kit, the IM shaft seals, probably mains (would be nice to have on the shelf), turbo rebuild kit, and my friend's girlfriend broke my passenger door handle. First time use (it was a new handle) and it gets slammed on the seat belt and it broke.
