i have a 87 golf and i want to put the 91 92 bumpers on will they just bolt right up i think they would just want to make sure i have the smaller bumpers now kina beat up want they nicer ones thanks dan
the gti bumpers fit on my '90 with some cutting done to the rear bumper and the metal bumper that's on the car.
The front ones need the square mounts.
If you mean put big bumpers on a car with small bumpers then yes it is possible. But the mounting brackets are different between the two. You can't just swap the shell.
Well ya can but you need to cut the hooks off the small bumper rebar to get the big bumper plastic to fit, then swap the plastic mounts on the fenders as mentioned above.
Also you don't need the metal piece under the front bumper on the big bumper, I even will go as far to say I think when it's there and you convert to big bumpers that it restricts the air flow to the radiator.
I did the small to big conversion and left in there. I'll be removing it next time I have the bumper off.
There is also a plastic piece that goes from the rad support to the bumper on real big bumper cars to direct air flow to the rad. I don't have that either yet.
I added cardboard ... wings? i dunno i cut a card board box apart and put them all around the rad and i got much better cooling.
That would work for a while at least I'm sure.
I'm going to be hitting the salvage yards to get the correct PCS.
hmmm how dose the bumpers stop air flow to the rad? sounds like a bit of work all prob do it some day lol to much other things to be fixed first (struts) lol
I thought about putting the bumpers from the 91 I bought for the TD motor swap onto the 89. I pulled everything off decided the bumpers were too rough to do it. Since then original bumpers have grown on me, so I am glad I didn't
The side moldings and wheel arches are different between small and big bumper cars. Big bumper cars also have the skirt/cover on the rocker.
It'll still work but it'll look a bit odd where they come together.

I have an 86 and I am working on swapping the bumpers, I think that the easiest thing to do is to switch the mounting brackets, because all that you have to do is drill two holes right beside the original one's and then you can bolt it on. the brackets are identical across the mk2s and and the big bumpers bolt right on. I will post pics when I am done, if you want.
