Audi 4000 Q with 5cyl TD motor--Anybody done This?
« on: February 10, 2009, 10:07:46 pm »
I was thinking about this the other day, what if you took an 87 4000 with Quattro, took out the gasser and built a 5cyl Turbo Diesel motor it. I don't know much about the Audi Diesels. So what kind of horse power and torque could these motors be good for?  I heard the car weighs about 2800lbs.
You guys know anybody who's done this?

the 4k's are really nice cars.  with quattro, it is a good platform for a rally car

you could always install a 4 cylinder diesel engine.  the 5 cylinders are good, but IMO, a 1.9TD or even 1.9TDI would be a better idea.  there just isn't the same parts availability for the 5 cyl diesel engine...

over in Europe the 4k came with a 4 cylinder engine.  the block should bolt right up to the trans as well, and buy the right brackets, or even just make your own.

Below is the 5 cylinder power graph:

it is actually just a 1.6 motor with an extra cylinder on it.

here is the 1.6 motor:

so as you can see, the power increase is almost relative to the extra cylinder.  going the 1.9 route with some mods should easily beat the stock 5 cyl, but a modded 5 cyl could still do quite well.  the main problem is having to buy an extra 2 head studs, valves, seals, etc.  but at least the 2.4L diesel's metal head gasket will work on the 2.0TD 5 cyl engine.

My quattro is actually 4-cylinder 1,8 carb engined. I have a good 1,6TD lying at floor, removed from ´86 fwd 80. It is pretty tempting to install the 1,6 to quattro :) I also have 5cyl 2,4TD in garage that I´d like to use. 2,5TDI would be cool too 8) But there are several differences in 4- and 5-cylinder bodies. Subframe, engine mounts, transmission, rear differential etc... 4-cyl engine does not bolt to typ81/85 5-cyl transmission. Later trannys have both bolt patterns.

ah thats good to know about the proper years that bolt up to the 4 cyl blocks.  i was considering the swap on an '87 audi 4k.  if it was quattro, it would have been a done deal, but i'm still lingering... holding out for a quattro version

of course adapter plates could make the swap work, but all that custom work would make it $$$$$

i did this conversion already, giles pump dnosd308 injectors 6,500rpm govnr mod 35lbs boost, it still to this day the fastest car i own, it even beats my volvo 760td with twin turbos, the volvo uses the 6 cylinder version of the audi turbo diesel, the 5 cylinder has some wicked power band and nothing else comes close to it.
86 td jetta power everything dd (update off the road for major resto).  97tdi bare bones, DD
and a private junkyard of various other vw/audi/bmw/peugeot/volvo/toyota diesels!!!
Cummins has the worlds record for being the most efficient engine ever!!!!!
for converting fuel into noise!
