92 jetta no power
« on: February 09, 2009, 12:59:25 pm »
so over the last few days ive had 0 power in my car, and now it barely wants to go over 100 km/h, and that is declining rapidly.

The Ip is getting fuel... if I hold the foot to the floor i'm only getting 4500 rpm outta it...I have to hold the foot to the floor to even get going.

I'm not really sure where to start, whats the chances this is IP related? Its a 1.6td...It will start and idle fine, just wont go very far very easily.

Where do you suggest i start looking? and no I dont have a compression tester....and I dont really think its that

Are you getting air bubbles in the fuel inlet to the injection pump?  Any fuel leaks?  How old is the fuel filter?

Andrew

No bubbles, its getting the fuel it is requesting.  I just put a new fuel filter on saturday.

have you already checked the timing?

have you ever opened the pump?

changed the governor?

does it smoke a lot? If no, the - the fuel screw may have backed it's self out over time and is just loose now rapidly speeding up that process. Check to see if that nut (that is supposed to lock it) hasn't come loose.

In the last three months I havnt done anything, but I did change the top half of the IP cause the throttle bushing went back in the fall...(governor went back on the way it came off, no mod).

No its not smoking more than normal, and havnt checked the timing, starts and idles fine!.

Where is this nut you speak of?

Are you familiar with the "fuel screw" ? it should have a thin-ish nut holding it in place to prevent it from turning by it's self. I'll find a picture and post again

similar pump but for more cylinders obviously. But the fuel screw is in the same location and i circled it with yellow. It's on the head side of the pump. should have a colored collar on it (probably fairly grubby though)

the more i think about it the more it sounds like the waste gate is stuck open. or blow off valve... but most likely waste gate.

*** the accelerator cable had come loose, wasn't pulling on the throttle arm all the way. what a stupid issue, i couldn't even get up hills on the way home LOL.  on the good point it forced me to stop at Giles place and get some IP parts I thought I might have needed, nice guy he is!
