So in getting the block in for an evaluation today I took off te oil pump. I am wondering if there are any particulatiries to the oil pump? How long do they last? Can they be rebuilt? What to look for?
Thanks!
The bentley has specs for the gear lash. There's nothing in them to rebuild. If the lash is past spec then get a new one (36mm gears preferably).
Thanks! I assume an after-market is available and will check.
You can hand lap the cover and remove any scoring.

I've done that trick also on some old air cooled VW's to get more oil pressure at idle. If I remember the paper gasket between the housing and the cover was around 1-2 thousandths and I would just lapp the cover to clean it up and then lapp the housing just to the point where you just couldn't feel any clearance sliding the drive gear in and out with the cover in place without the gasket. When the gasket was put back in it had enough clearance and did have more oil pressure. But yes just replace the pump for no more than what they cost.
Personally, they seem indestructible, but very important. My only bad experience came when I swapped a 1.6T for my 1.6na. I didn't check compression, drove it for three days, lost power on I-44. Then, I checked compression (low-190's) tore down, broke #3 oil nozzle during the rebuild-I fly blind sometimes-took the oil pump off and accidentally discovered the screen was stopped up with fingernail sized paint chips. I'll bet I chekc that screen next time!!-good luck-warren

Hell, I knew everything there was to know that was worth knowing by the time I was 15, but I forgot a lot of it in the past 45 years
Just out of curiosity, does any one have the PN for the 36mm geared oil pump?
I've got the following numbers:
Engine Codes 1V, AHU, 1Z (this includes the 1991-1192 ECOdiesel, 1994-1998 Passat TDI, and the 1997-1998 TDI. I'm sure it also includes any AAZ motor as well)
028 115 105 G
And
Engine codes CR, CY, CK, EN, JK, ME, MF, 1V (basically, any transverse-mounted 1.6 NA or TD).
068 115 105 AN
I'm pretty sure the first number is for the 36 mm, and the second number is for the 32mm.
Anyone able to confirm this?
