How hard is it to change the drivers side axle on a 93? Can it come out without having to take any of the suspension apart? Thanks.
I've never been able to find a way to get it out by just unbolting both ends.
What I do is remove the top ball joint bolt and pry down on the swing arm until the ball joint pops out... this frees up the entire strut to swing around and give you enough clearance to remove the axle.
I do it this way so that the alignment is not affected... and mine come apart easily 'cause they were slathered in antisieze before installation. Others may find that the three ball joint mounting bolts are the ones they can free up... if you carefully mark where the ball joint was sitting you should be able to get it back together without needed to realign.
thanks.
I will give it a try. I had a vw tech say he could get it out without separating the ball joint, but it looked pretty tight to do it.
thanks.

The best thing is to give yourself plenty of room so you don't snag the boot on something and if one of those balls pops out on the inner joint from it being compressed the whole way and turned the wrong way at the same time a Chinese puzzle is easy compared to the frustration of putting that damn ball back in it's hole
it actually turned out that all the bolts holding the cv to the tranny had backed out. I had a buddy put in a new motor a couple of months ago and he forgot loctite and forgot to tighten them up all the way. Needless to say I tightened them all up (anyone know what size it is? It isn't 6mm it is close, but not quite.) Anyways problem solved. Thanks for the help guys.
The drive axle to tranny bolts have an 8 mm triple squre head.
